Move-Out Guide

*updated for 2024

It’s almost that time of year again - here are some helpful tips for Miami Students (and permanent Oxford residents) to navigate this busy time!

Before we begin - the details - Miami University’s final exam week is May 13th - 17th, with commencement on the 18th and 19th. Move-out can begin as early as the 13th but will most likely be heaviest the 16th - 21st!

For Miami Students

Plan Ahead

  • Do an inventory on your cleaning tools - supplies may be low at our local grocery and retail establishments come move-out week so plan ahead and stock up on what you need now.
  • Coordinate your move-out time with your room or housemates to minimize heavy furniture standoffs in the hallway and multiple car pile-ups in the driveway.
  • Make a plan for what you can donate ahead of time. Load those items up first and make a trip to drop them off so that it doesn’t end up in the trash come move-out day.
*Note: portable storage units (such as pods) are not permitted on public streets, roads, highways, right-of-ways, or sidewalks in the City of Oxford, Ohio. (Oxford Codified Ordinance, Section 311.05)

Donate/Upcycle

Try to donate as much as possible to keep those gently used items out of our landfills and into the homes of those who may need or want them. You can drop off all donations during Sharefest this year, May 16th - 21st. Drop off will be from 9 AM to 5 PM at the Chestnut Fields parking lot.  Note: there will be on-campus pick-ups at all residence halls.

If you want to donate items before Sharefest starts, take a look at these resources:

Utilities & Additional Trash Pickup

Don’t forget to schedule your utility termination, here. Check with your landlords or rental agencies about extra trash pick-ups for off-campus housing students.  FYI: all items out for pickup should be bagged, plastic-wrapped or in a container. If items are not contained, they may become community litter and lead to potential code enforcement!

Vacant House Check

If you plan on only leaving town temporarily, go ahead and fill out the Vacant House Check so that Oxford’s Police Department can keep an eye on your residence while you are away.

For Residents

Move-out week means the town is extraordinarily busy, but that doesn’t have to inconvenience our residents if we plan ahead, too!

Leave Extra Driving Time

Make a note that your commute time getting across town could be longer this week. Make sure to allow extra time so you don’t get frustrated, and be patient with the drivers in town who may not be as familiar with our streets as you are!

Get Your Groceries Before/After Commencement

While most of the Miami students are not stocking up on groceries this week, the stores do see a spike in activity as parents start preparing for Graduation parties. If you can avoid shopping the days leading up to Graduation Weekend (May 18th and 19th this year) and a couple of days after, you should be able to avoid the crowds and not see too many missing items on those shelves!

Make Reservations

Restaurants are going to be BUSY during this time with extra visitors in town. If you plan on dining at one of Oxford’s finest, make reservations ahead of time to save yourself the hassle of a long wait. Or better yet, order pick up and venture to the outer edges of town and enjoy your meal al fresco in one of Oxford’s parks.

Don’t Get Charged with a $100 Fine

The City of Oxford will be enforcing the anti-scavenging provision during move-out. This provision prohibits a person from tampering or sorting through material placed at the curbside for collection. Offenders will be charged with a minor misdemeanor and fined $100. (Oxford Codified Ordinances, Section 931.08).
