Memphis police respond to to the shooting of a child on West Shelby Drive.

An 11-year-old boy is recovering after Memphis police said he accidentally shot himself with a gun he reportedly found at the school bus stop Tuesday morning.

Shortly before 7 a.m., the boy was at the bus stop in front of his home in the 1700 block of West Shelby Drive when the gun discharged and he was hit in the right hand, said Lt. Col. Caroline Mason.

"This is an ongoing investigation. What we have right now is very little details, but we do have an 11-year-old that was shot," Mason said. "We don't have all the particulars, but it was a small handgun and it did not belong to anyone in the home. We are still sorting out all the information."

Mason said the boy was taken by his grandmother to Methodist South Hospital and later transferred to LeBonheur Children's Hospital.

The shooting is one of five recent accidental shootings involving children in the Memphis metro area.

On Sunday, a 9-year-old boy in Horn Lake was killed when he accidentally shot himself. In Memphis, two children have been killed and another child was injured when they accidentally shot themselves last month.

Memphis police said gun locks are available for free at all precincts in the city.
