Four of Ohio University’s online master’s programs, as well as its overall online bachelor’s program, were ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News and World Report in rankings released today.
The four master’s programs – business administration, education, engineering, and information technology – were ranked among the top 100 programs in the nation. They are among 52 programs ranging from associate’s to master’s offered at OHIO, with another 18 moving toward launch, said Ohio University Senior Vice Provost for Instructional Innovation Bradley Cohen.
“Our globally-connected campuses are primarily located in the heart of Appalachia; our geography positively influences who we are and how we serve our students, their future employers, and society. Our collective mission is to enable and empower our students, no matter where they are, to thrive in and change an evolving world for the better, every day,” Cohen said. “Whether students come to our campuses or connect virtually, our values – grit, resilience, practical arts, family, community, our moral compass – inform our mission, infuse the experience and express the lasting goals we invite students to develop with our support.”
Of the 34,871 students at OHIO, approximately 46 percent are enrolled in some online class, and about 26 percent are enrolled exclusively online. About one-third of OHIO’s faculty regularly teach online, ensuring that all students have access to the same high-quality education, regardless of their location.
“OHIO is truly a global university, from the Athens and regional campuses to living rooms and offices around the world,” Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis said. “This high-quality educational experience is making Ohio into a national destination for online education, and the rankings show our foundation is strong as we continue to grow.”
The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education once again led OHIO’s rankings, placing 34th out of more than 300 online graduate programs nationally, and the best in Ohio. The Patton College offers online master’s degrees in curriculum and instruction, reading education, coaching education and soccer coaching education, among other online offerings.
The Russ College of Engineering and Technology placed 37th in the nation and tied for second-best in Ohio out of nearly 100 programs ranked by U.S. News. It offers master’s degrees in civil engineering, electrical engineering and engineering management.
For the first time, the Scripps College of Communication was ranked in the Best Online Information Technology, placing 41st overall and second in Ohio. The ranking includes information systems, computer science, computer engineering and software engineering programs.
The College of Business’ online MBA program ranked 82nd out of more than 300 programs, second-best in Ohio.

OHIO was also ranked in a tie for 264th for its online bachelor’s programs as the University continues to add to its offerings. The rankings were compiled from information gathered by U.S. News and World Report in the summer and fall of 2018.
