Following a national search, Michelle Lopez has been selected as the new Director of Global Education. Her appointment began on Dec. 5, 2022.
Michelle was most recently the executive director of the Berkshire Immigrant Center, a small award-winning nonprofit in Massachusetts dedicated to serving foreign-born populations in attaining comprehensive legal services, education and resources. From 2013 - 2018, she held various roles at international education nonprofits and institutions. Michelle lived in Cuba for almost four years and authored a chapter, "Cultura 7 Comunidad en La Picadora" in an ethnography published in Cuba, El Patromonio de las Comunidad Rurales (Fundación Fernando Ortiz, 2016). Earlier this year, she was named on Berkshire Community College's 40 Under Forty list, and she received the Nonprofit Center of the Berkshires' Rising Star Award in 2021.
In this position, Michelle will oversee the Office of Global Education; work to increase interest in and access to international opportunities for students; collaborate with the other directors in the Experiential Learning Center; support the COIL (Collaborative Online International/Intercultural/Interdisciplinary Learning) program; serve as the primary liaison for international student services, including responsibilities related to risk management and emergency response; and assist in strengthening international student recruitment.
I would also like to thank Dean Tracy Allen for his interim leadership over the Office of Global Education and for sustaining the forward momentum in global education opportunities for our students.
Please join me in welcoming Michelle to SUNY Oneonta.
Sincerely,
Eileen Morgan-Zayachek
Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs
