Dori Freeman channels a newfound friendship on her stunning new song “Another Time,” featured on her forthcoming album Every Single Star due out Sept. 27.
The three-minute track, which Billboard premieres exclusively below today (July 23), was written shortly after playing at Vancouver Folk Festival last year. As she sings of a new friendship, Freeman’s airy vocals are at the forefront alongside steady finger-picked guitar and a mesmerizing drum beat. “Did I know you in another time?” she croons on the chorus.
“I ended up spending the weekend with this girl whose music I really admired, and we became fast friends,” Freeman tells Billboard. “There aren’t as many ‘love’ songs about platonic friendships, especially the bond between women which can feel especially magical, so I decided to write one. There was one instance in particular that inspired the song. We were riding in a hotel shuttle one night after the festival (and a glass of wine or two) and sang Shania Twain songs the whole drive back.”

“Another Time” is the first taste of new music from the singer-songwriter’s forthcoming project Every Single Star. It marks the follow-up from 2017’s Letters Never Read and the second release on Freeman’s own label Blue Hens Music. Now the mother of a young girl, Freeman’s Every Single Star features songs penned for her daughter.
“People don’t really talk about motherhood in the music industry,” she says. “Musicians that are also moms and have to juggle touring and being at home and spending enough time with your child; that’s something that’s really hard for me to find balance in.”
