Dr. Katherine Brown Named Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences

Walsh University is proud to announce that Katherine T. Brown, Ph.D., has been appointed the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, effective immediately. Dr. Brown has served in this position as Interim Dean since July 2020, replacing Michael Dunphy, Ph.D., following his appointment as Walsh Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Dr. Brown came to Walsh University in 2011 as Director of Museum Studies and Assistant Professor of Art History. She received tenure and Associate Professor in May 2016 and was promoted to full Professor in May 2020. Her leadership roles on campus have included serving as Walsh University’s Director of the Honors Program for one year and leading five Global Learning programs to Rome and London. She was a Visiting Scholar at the American Academy in Rome during Summer 2019 and currently serves on the board of the Italian Art Society. Her most recent scholarship accomplishment is a monograph, The Legend of Veronica in Early Modern Art, published by Routledge in March 2020.  In May 2021, she participated in a curatorial group led by Florida State University on the exhibition Treasure of Chianti, a show about Roman coins at the museum of Santa Maria della Scala in Siena on display through September 2, 2021. 

Before joining Walsh in 2011, Dr. Brown served for five years as the Director of Hay House, an Italian Renaissance Revival historic house museum owned and operated by The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and Curator of Historic Macon Foundation (2004-06), both sites in Macon, GA. From 2000-2004, she served as the Art Historian and Program Coordinator for the University of Georgia's Study Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy. Dr. Brown was Head of Education for the American Federation of Arts in New York (1997-99), Curator of Education at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha (1995-97), and Curator of Education at the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia (1993-95).  Dr. Brown has given conference presentations at the Ohio Museums Association, The Renaissance Society of America, the Medieval Congress at Kalamazoo (MI), and the Medieval and Renaissance Conference at New College in Sarasota (FL).
