​​North Carolina has a mixed record on gun laws, and is above the national average in its rate of gun deaths. In 2023, North Carolina repealed its permit to purchase handguns–a fundamental requirement the state had in place for over a century. Lawmakers have also made efforts to repeal several remaining gun safety protections. The state does, however, have strong domestic violence laws for abusers under restraining orders.
