Vitiligo is a common autoimmune disease affecting approximately 1% of the population. Patients with the disease experience a loss of pigmentation in the skin due to the loss of melanocytes. The causes of vitiligo are complex and include both genetic and environmental factors, including factors that are intrinsic to melanocytes and innate and adaptive immunity. Among autoimmune diseases, vitiligo is notable because the disease tissue can be readily and non-invasively sampled. Using a novel at-home sample collection strategy, Drs. Garber (BIB), Harris, and Rishigi will work to untangle early pathogenic events. #vitiligo #autoimmunedisease
