Song Premiere: Balsam Range Lets Go of Worries on 'Santa Barbara'

North Carolina-based bluegrass band Balsam Range accept the things they can't change on "Santa Barbara," an upbeat, tongue-in-cheek response to when life isn't going your way.

Balsam Range vocalist and fiddler Buddy Melton says the song is a message to be kinder to ourselves.

"If we have learned one thing over that last year, it is that things happen that are just out of our control," Melton tells Wide Open Country. "We may often feel like we are the root of all our problems and that things just won't go our way,  but we must stop beating ourselves up. Instead, kick back, relax and let our new song 'Santa Barbara' confirm that we all have those days. I am a big fan of clever lyrics and 'Santa Barbara,' written by the great Adam Wright, is just that.  A fun up-beat tempo song with a catchy hook. ' Santa Barbara' takes us on a fun emotional journey to the point of just kicking our own..."

Balsam Range, made up of Melton (fiddle, lead and tenor vocals), Darren Nicholson (mandolin, octave mandolin, lead vocals, baritone and low tenor vocals), Dr. Marc Pruett (banjo), Tim Surrett (bass, dobro, baritone and lead vocals) and Caleb Smith (guitar, lead and baritone vocals), was formed in 2007. The band takes its name from a range of mountains that surrounds their home county of Haywood, North Carolina, where the Great Smoky Mountains meet the Blue Ridge.

The band is a two-time recipient of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Entertainer of the Year award.
