ES2 Spring 2023 Equity LA Inquiry Form
Please fill out the following information if you are interested in being a ES2 Equity Learning Assistant (ELA) for Spring 2023. The initial due-date for this form is Wednesday, November 16, but we'll continue accepting applications until we have enough ELAs to support every section of the course.

Equity Learning Assistants (ELAs) help support instructors in facilitating justice-focused discussions and activities during the lab period of ES2. These activities highlight the social, political and economic impacts of engineering and technology, and are careful to reject notions that all problems are best solved through technology. As this position is a part of ES2, ELAs will ideally have taken ES2 in a previous semester, but another similar data-science/computing course is fine as well. Programming proficiency is NOT required, but a familiarity with the role of programming in engineering is useful.

We will be hiring at least 10 ELAs this Spring. Please apply if you are interested and available for the meeting times!

Requirements:
  • Weekly seminar: ELAs attend a separate weekly 75 minute seminar meeting every Wednesday from 12-1:15 pm to discuss issues of justice and equity in engineering and prepare to facilitate lab discussions and activities.
  • ES-2 Lab: ELAs attend lab every Friday for their assigned section (below you will indicate which lab times you are available, you will then be assigned to one). There are two ELAs assigned to each section.
  • Weekly instructor meeting: ELAs attend a weekly meeting with their instructor for lab planning, discussing roles, and debriefing. This meeting time will be decided to fit everyone's schedules.
  • January training: We will conduct a training in January before classes begin with instructors and ELAs. This training will be during the week of January 9 and we will work to find a time that works for everyone. You do NOT need to be on campus for this training.

This is a paid hourly position, like being a TA. The pay rate is $17/hour. This position requires about 5 hours per week, including the ELA seminar, lab, the weekly instructor meeting, and prep work for seminar.

No prior TA or (E)LA experience is required. The weekly meeting will equip ELAs with background knowledge and teaching strategies for facilitating class activities. If you are interested in topics of diversity, inclusion, and equity, how those relate to engineering/data science, and how to help ES2 students to think more broadly about these ideas, then we encourage you to apply to be an Equity LA using this form!
