Resistance during the Holocaust came in all forms and music was one of them. Somehow, amidst the chaos and horror of the Holocaust, music featured significantly in many ghettos and camps. How did victims of the Holocaust still manage to sing, play instruments, and create music? What purpose did this serve for those who played and for those who listened? This webinar will be led by Tamar Machado-Recanati, music therapist, musicologist and researcher of Jewish music during the Holocaust.
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming SCOSA events.

SCOSA NEWS & EVENTS

Stockton Age Friendly University (AFU) Update
by Karen Rose, Ph.D., SCOSA AFU champion; adjunct professor, Psychology and Health Science
The theme this month is forging connections!  At our SCOSA retreat in June, the team discussed broadening age-friendly initiatives to the community by building connections with Stockton retirees and alumni.  Creative and meaningful intergenerational collaborations among retirees, alumni and the University can be mutually beneficial and important in a post-COVID world.  Consider the work of the Stockton University Retirement Association (SURA) who recently restarted regular donations to the student food pantry.  Their behind-the-scenes volunteer work helps students in fundamental ways and is much appreciated.  If you are a member of a community group serving older adults and have ideas for collaborations, please write to me, Karen.Rose@stockton.eduI look forward to talking with you!

Atlantic County Needs Assessment Project:
Focus Groups Round Out Data Collection
for SCOSA's Community Needs Assessment Project for Older Adults, funded by the Atlantic County Area Agency on Aging, is drawing to a close. Thanks to all of the older adult residents, including this group pictured at Heritage Woods in Galloway, for participating in this project designed to assist the county in developing their 2022-2024 Area Plan on Aging.  SCOSA’s unique approach was multidimensional, including telephone polling conducted by the Stockton Polling Institute, an online survey, and four focus groups.  Alyssa Maurice, Stockton Polling Institute director, and John Froonjian, executive director of the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy at Stockton, were instrumental in the project’s success as was Dr. Jenny Dunkle, assistant professor of Social Work and our project director. The county will be issuing bid requests to Atlantic County provider agencies in the near future and programs will be selected for funding prior to the start of 2022. Funded programs are designed to assist older Atlantic County residents to age in place.

Activity and You
by Michaelle CWhat’s the very best thing you can do to ensure that your body and mind remain healthy well into old age?  Remain active.  I know we’ve all heard it before, and it’s the last thing we want to do most days.  But being active can be fun!  You don’t have to go out and run a marathon, or spend time doing things that you don’t like to do.  All activities count!  Gardening, walking the dog, even vacuuming (although you may rather go to the gym than clean the house).

Walking is something that most people can do easily, with no equipment or commitment of any kind.  Just walk out your front door, walk away from your house for 15-minutes, and then come back.  Every day. Or you could join us on one of our SCOSA walks [insert link].  A group of lively, interesting and friendly people gather in various parks around the area for an hour walk; all are welcome.  There is no set pace, and no one will be left behind.  Give us a try, you won’t regret it!

Pickleball
It’s been a long time, but get ready for Pickleball.  First the gym floor was replaced and then the pandemic struck, but we’re getting closer to being able to play.  We’re hoping to start in September.  Watch for updates in our Newsletters!
