October Featured Programs:

Join SCOSA in Manahawkin on October Fridays for two new courses
The American Civil War       Register HERE
Fridays 10/7, 14, 21, & 28/2022 12:45-1:45pm
Stockton at Manahawkin, MIS 3, 712 East Bay Ave, Manahawkin

The Civil War narrative is large and often confusing in its telling. It is evoked each generation to explain not only what happened but also to explain the relationship between the states and the federal government, the rights of individual citizens, and the myriad issues of race in America. The military history is sweeping and exciting but it is the political accommodations, the arrangements and the compromises which form the basis for contemporary arguments regarding federalism. This course, led by Dr. Richard O'Meara, examines the military, political, and cultural issues which comprise the legacy of the civil war with an eye towards their application to current issues in the United States.

Baseball: The Early Days       Register HERE
Fridays 10/7, 14, 21, & 28/2022 2-3pm
Stockton at Manahawkin, MIS 3,712 East Bay Ave, Manahawkin

This course, led by Dr. Deb Dagavarian, will look at three periods in early Major League Baseball history.  We’ll start with its beginnings in the mid-19th century: from the 1840s in New York City to its proliferation during the Civil War and beyond, to the start of major league play. Next, we will examine the “dead ball” era from 1900 to 1920: from the early competition between the National and American leagues to baseball’s first superstars, and the scandal of the 1919 World Series. Finally, we will focus on the second World War period: from the depletion of the major leagues of its stars enlisting to the development of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. We will also discuss what is happening this year in baseball’s postseason, the best month for baseball fans everywhere.

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group: First Week a Success
New Participants always Welcome

On Wednesday September 28th, SCOSA launched our new weekly Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group, funded with federal dollars from the Atlantic County Office on Aging. Eighteen caregivers attended either in-person or via Zoom, and were welcomed by Dr. Christine Gayda-Chelder, associate professor of Psychology, Gerontology coordinator, and SCOSA service chair, who provided the first week’s brief lecture prior to Q&A and ‘support group’ activities.  Dr. Christine Ferri, associate professor of psychology and SCOSA assistant director led support group activities for the Zoom participants, while Dr. Gayda-Chelder handed the in-person group. Participant response has been quite favorable: "This group is a blessing! I am so happy this meets once a week!"

New participants are always welcome, preregistration is required.  The program meets on Wednesdays from 12:00-1:00pm in the Campus Center on Stockton’s Main Campus or via Zoom. For additional details CLICK HERE, or register HERE.

SCOSA Staff Updates

SCOSA is pleased to welcome Pamela Puerto as a new part-time office assistant. A native of New Orleans, LA, Pam has lived in New Jersey for 27 years. Pam's professional background includes serving as the Giving Officer on the Resource Development team of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. Previously, she worked with the Atlantic City School district as a school secretary and in the casino industry where she learned most of her work and people-person skills. Pam enjoys meeting new people and networking to establish long lasting relationships throughout our community.

SCOSA is in the process of hiring two additional part-time professionals to assist with our older adult programs in Atlantic, Cape May, and Ocean counties. We will introduce them on our web-site and in our November E-News.

SCOSA also welcomes Madison Krisanda as our MSW Intern for the 2022/23 academic year. She enjoys painting, soccer, roller skating, decorating, and spending time with her puppy Myla.  Madison also likes being in nature with the company of her yoga mat. A fun fact about Madison is that she was born on Leap Year. She is looking forward to learning new things, working with SCOSA this fall, and engaging in her classes and the Center’s programs. Madison can be reached at
krisandm@go.stockton.edu

SCOSA Director Part of National Climate Change Initiative

Director Dave Burdick is among a small group of national/international leaders led by Karl Pillemer, Ph.D., professor of Gerontology in Medicine at Cornell University, working to establish a Climate Change and Aging Formal Interest Group in the Gerontological Society of America (GSA).  Burdick teaches an undergraduate course on environmental psychology focused primarily on sustainability issues. SCOSA has sponsored several programs related to sustainability, including lectures from national and local experts. Burdick convened or co-convened the Formal Interest Group on Technology and Aging (GSA-TAG) from 2006-2011.

SCOSA Expected to Receive Additional Funds from Atlantic County

After reviewing SCOSA’s 2022 service units in our Educational, and Socialization/Recreation Programs, the Atlantic County Area Agency on Aging offered to provide $10,000 in additional funding for the period of October – December, 2022.  If approved by Atlantic County Commissioners, these funds will help us to offer additional programming through the end of the year.

SCOSA Ocean County Monitoring Meeting

SCOSA recently had our first annual monitoring meeting, required for our federal funding through Ocean County.  Representing Stockton/SCOSA were SCOSA’s Older Adult Programs Coordinator Gina Maguire, director Dave Burdick and Stockton grants manager Ann Marie White.  Nicole Concepcion and Robin Dumont-Klein of the Ocean County Office of Senior Services thoroughly reviewed SCOSA’s recordkeeping and programming for 2022.  The monitoring visit went very well, with Nicole and Robin sharing ideas for additional programming and funding opportunities.  Thanks to everyone who helps to make our Ocean County programs a success, especially Michele Collins-Davies, Nicole Heinrich, and the staff at Stockton at Manahawkin!

SCOSA Hosts Players and Playwrights Reading at Stockton AC Campus

On Sunday, September 18 from 2:00 to 4:00pm, the Fannie Lou Hamer Room at Stockton Atlantic City was the scene for an enjoyable afternoon of readings of short skit by members of Players and Playwrights Reader’s Theatre by the Jersey Shore. The group, led by Dayle Friedman, meets regularly to write, read, and refine short plays and came under the sponsorship of SCOSA by virtue of former SCOSA staff member Michaelle Cooke’s involvement with the group.  According to Dayle, this was their first opportunity to give a public performance since before the COVID-19 Pandemic and the audience of about 50 individuals rewarded their efforts with enthusiastic laughter, groans, and applause.

Players and Playwrights, and SCOSA, are grateful to Stockton Production Services (especially associate director Shannon Aungst & specialist Nick Georgei), Stockton Events Services (Lisa Warnock), Stockton Atlantic City staff, and our intern Madison Krisanda for their assistance.  A link to the program recording will be provided in our November E-News.

AGE FRIENDLY UNIVERSITY (AFU) Update
by Karen Rose, Ph.D., SCOSA AFU champion; adjunct professor, Psychology and Health Science

The Stockton Federation of College Teachers (SFT) Summer Workshop featured an engaging presentation by Enrico De Rooy, assistant director of Admissions and Transfer Students, entitled ‘The Rise or Fall of the Adult Student at Stockton”.  Mr. De Rooy discussed the growing national pool of adult learners beyond the age of 25, their educational needs (a college degree, career advancement, or encore careers), and the benefits of having greater age diversity on campus.  He also discussed ways to attract adult learners such as more online programming, evening classes, and identifying and adding career focus programs. Overall, having greater age diversity on campus has the potential to meet the needs of the University, the surrounding community, and the broader commitment to an Age-Friendly University.

Three Generations - One Perspective
by Jonathan Ubiera, Psychology Student

I’m a 31-year-old New York City native who recently moved to Galloway, New Jersey, to become a psychology major at Stockton University. As you can imagine, adjusting from city to suburban life has taken much. I came upon an opportunity for extra credit in my undergraduate environmental psychology course (taught by Dr. Burdick) for attending SCOSA’s SILL: Exploring Lake Fred, which my younger self would have completely ignored.

As I ventured out, I quickly noticed that while I am one of the older students in my Environmental Psychology class, I am the youngest in the SILL class. It has been quite exciting and unique to experience the dichotomy between the groups. I often find myself sharing facts and anecdotes with my younger classmates that they may not know, but in the SILL group, I get to experience the other side with my older peers. I enjoy lovely stories in the company of individuals who remember when Stockton had a swimming pool and Jimmy Carter was the U.S. President. I’m reminded that there is a rich history we can relive from speaking with our elders. I find that my younger classmates may find certain things (TikTok trends, celebrity relationships, and the latest Yeezy releases) to be enthralling. Conversely, my older peers find peace and comfort in the history of the spaces where we currently live and explore. I can honestly say that all three generations have had an impact on my perspective, and I relish in the fact that one day my younger peers and I will be the ones passing along anecdotes and history to those who follow.
