Stockton Holds Back Pioneers 51-38

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (8-2, 3-2 NJAC) used a smothering first half defense to capture a 51-38 win over William Paterson University (6-3, 3-2 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Lauren Winant (Middletown/Middletown South) led the Ospreys with career highs of 11 points and eight rebounds in the game.

Stockton opened a 16-10 lead after one quarter as Adriyana Jennings (Camden/Winslow Twp.) scored five points in the frame. The Ospreys extended the margin to 33-18 after 20 minutes of play, holding down the Pioneers on 4-14 (28.5%) shooting.

A 16-2 run to open the period gave Stockton a commanding 32-12 lead that they never relinquished. Five points each by Madison LaRosa (Oceanport/Shore Regional) and Ionyonia Alves (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) and four markers by Ikechi Wokocha (Galloway/Absegami) spurred the run.

The teams settled in during the third with Stockton outscoring the Pioneers 11-10 and advancing the margin to 44-28 after three periods of play. Winant tallied five of her markers in the quarter.

The final period became academic as the teams traded baskets and the Ospreys came away with the 51-38 victory.

LaRosa added 10 points to the Stockton total and led the team with four assists, with Winant hitting 2-3 from behind the arc on the day. Emma Morrone (Maywood/Hackensack) pilfered four steals, with Madison Dulude (Sewell/Washington Twp.) pulling down six rebounds. With the victory, Stockton snapped a six-game losing skid to the Pioneers.

For the Pioneers, Brianna Smith was the only player in double figures with 10 points. Teammate Justina Cabezas had seven rebounds to top the visitors.

Stockton will be off until December 29 when the Ospreys will play in the NYU Holiday Classic in New York City. Stockton will face NYU, who are ranked #2 nationally by D3hoops.com.
