Academics

Tufts' Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO) works directly with students on their accommodations requests.

The Tufts Religious Accommodations policy specifies what an accommodation is:

A reasonable change in the work or academic environment that enables a student or employee to practice or otherwise observe a sincerely held religious practice or belief without undue hardship or fundamentally altering the educational, workplace or mission of the university.

A reasonable religious accommodation may include but is not limited to:

  • time for prayer during a work day

  • the ability to attend religious events or observe a religious holiday

  • or any necessary modification to university policy, procedure or other requirement for a student’s or employee’s (or prospective employee’s) religious beliefs, observance or practice, provided such accommodation is reasonable and does not cause undue hardship or create a fundamental alteration of the educational, workplace or mission of the university

Accommodations related to the observance of Ramadan are included in this policy, though all requests must be approved.

Students should email Nadra Sultan at [email protected], with the option of cc-ing their professors. An email template is attached below:

Once OEO receives a request from a student, OEO will connect with the faculty member for an interactive discussion. They will assess the reasonableness of the request and the available accommodations that the faculty member can provide. OEO then issues a determination, notice of which is provided to the student.

Chaplain Najiba and Chaplain Elyse Nelson Winger are happy to assist with this process.
