“Coded Bias”: New Paltz faculty discuss the award-winning documentary, Jan. 27

The popular Science on Screen® series at the Rosendale Theatre continues this week with a community dialogue about ways in which artificial intelligence and face-recognition software discriminate against women and people of color.

Members of the community can watch the award-winning documentary “Coded Bias” now through Jan. 28 on the Theatre’s virtual cinema page, and tune in for a virtual panel discussion of the film on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m.

The panel will feature SUNY New Paltz faculty members Tyrell Connor, assistant professor of sociology, and Maureen Morrow, professor of biology and member of the Rosendale Theatre’s Science on Screen committee, who will moderate. They will be joined for this conversation by Juan Figueroa, Ulster County Sheriff, and Keith O’Hara, director of the computer science program at Bard College.

The event will be live streamed on multiple platforms:

“Coded Bias” was directed by Shalini Kantayya and released in 2020. It follows researchers exploring how algorithms encode and propagate bias, and how the technologies that run on those algorithms – including increasingly widespread tools like facial-recognition software – create misinformation and cause real harm for women and people of color.

Science on Screen® is an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre, with major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
