Houston Police K-9 to undergo treatment at A&M Veterinary Hospital

Suffering from bone cancer, T-Rex will be treated at the Texas A&M Veterinary Hospital.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Houston Police Officer Paul Foster describes his partner as lovable and full of energy.

But, he also has four paws and a tail.

In 2015, Foster was gifted T-Rex, a K-9, and they've worked together since.

"We go out every night and hunt down the bad guys who run," Foster said.

T-Rex is responsible for the capture of around 100 dangerous criminals.

"He's done some pretty awesome things for the citizens of Houston," said Foster.

Working together, the two have become close. And in mid-December, Foster began to notice when T-Rex started to fall behind.

Foster said T-Rex began limping. When they took him to the vet the diagnosis came back - bone cancer.

Foster and T-Rex were referred to the Texas A&M Veterinary Hospital. There, T-Rex will undergo an amputation.

Doctors at the hospital say T-Rex has a good shot at recovery.

"Chances are 75 percent that he will return to normal activity and in the 90 percents to acceptable," said Brandan Janssens, Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology.

However, after the procedure, T-Rex isn't finished. Foster said the department will still use him to sniff out explosives or as a demonstration dog.

"Giving him a purpose, and giving him something to do, I think will help with his rehabilitation," said Foster.
