2024 ACMG Meeting Update

Drs. Kevin Bowling and Alexa Dickson from the Clinical Genomics Laboratory led a session at the 2024 American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) annual meeting focused on Variant Scientists in Genomic Medicine. The session was a resounding success, drawing significant attendance with standing-room-only capacity, and receiving rave reviews. It highlighted the pivotal role of Variant Scientists in genomic medicine.

As the demand for accurate genetic interpretation increases alongside the use of next-generation sequencing, the importance of Variant Scientists has become undeniable. Speakers in the recent ACMG session, who either work directly as Variant Scientists or closely with them, shared insights into their crucial role, career paths, training programs, and essential analytical tools. They effectively underscored the diversity of responsibilities within this field and provided attendees with valuable insights and knowledge.

The session was particularly enlightening for those employing Variant Scientists, showcasing the myriad ways they can contribute to laboratory operations and bolster research endeavors. It also served as a beacon for those interested in pursuing a career as Variant Scientists, while emphasizing their integral contributions to genomic medicine and translational research. Given the strong interest from stakeholders, Drs. Bowling and Dickson are already planning a proposal for a session at the 2025 ACMG annual meeting!
