Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University student-athletes
Dana Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) and
Nicole Petrovich (East Hanover/Hanover Park) teamed up with the Athletes with Disabilities Network Northeast Chapter and the Arc of Atlantic County to host a sit-down volleyball tournament in I-Wing Gym on November 8.
Bibeault, a thrower on the Stockton women's track & field team, and Petrovich, an infielder on the Osprey softball team, are minoring in Disability Studies and organized the event as part of their Disability Cultures & Advocacy class. Members of the Stockton field hockey and track & field teams also participated in the tournament.
Bibeault and Petrovich created the tournament as a way to raise awareness of adaptive sports, empower the disabled community and promote inclusion between them and people who are not disabled. The purpose was to educate the Stockton community about the difficulties that those with disabilities face with regard to opportunities to play sports.
Eight teams comprised of over 50 participants played in the tournament. After an hour of learning and practicing the skills of sit-down volleyball, the tournament was held over a three-hour span, with the winners receiving $25 gift cards and the runners-up getting Osprey Fan t-shirts.
