The Catskill Mountains-based exhibition of a current Master of Fine Arts candidate and a recent MFA alumna is the subject of a recent article in Hyperallergic, one of the world’s leading contemporary art publications, with more than one million monthly web visitors.
“Decoding Craft,” the two-person exhibition by Erin Lee Antonak ’21g (Sculpture) and Sariah Park ’20g (Printmaking), is on display at Gallery 222 in Hurleyville, New York, through Nov. 1. The exhibition is presented as part of the Indigenous Women’s Voices Summit, hosted by Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre.
“We are the descendants of craftsmen and women,” the artists said in their statement for the gallery. “We made (and continue to make) objects to celebrate, to mourn, to welcome, to give thanks, to heal.”
“Decoding Craft” features fiber and mixed-media works that pay homage to the artists’ lineages. Antonak comes from a family of cornhusk braiders and makers of pipes, jewelry, clothing, baskets and floor mats, while Park’s work explores the meaning of mixed heritage in contemporary America.
