Classes are held at the Ringling College Museum Campus, Main Campus, and online throughout the year. Summer Studios and Summer Teen Studios offer students the opportunity to investigate new and proven techniques while developing their unique style and advancing critical thinking skills. Classes are intergenerational, or specified for adults or teens and pre-teens. See categories and course descriptions to confirm a class is right for you. Find inspiration, outstanding instruction, and interdisciplinary opportunities in classes that are fun and educational. Explore traditional art techniques, learn to design in a hybrid environment of digital and traditional approaches, bring stories to life through creative writing, film, or photography, and so much more. 5 sessions: Monday & Wednesday; 16.5 hr • Aug. 2-18 is 6 sessions: 9-11:45 am • Sept. 8-22 is 5 sessions: 1-4:20 pm Seth Barendse In this class, students new to working with clay will learn the basics of hand building. Beginning with pinch pots, coil pots, and moving into soft and hard slab construction, students will learn a variety of clay construction skills and techniques. Completed pieces will be bisque fired, glazed, and finish fired. All skill levels are welcome. Students with experience will have individual instruction in more advanced hand building techniques as needed. Clay, glaze and firings provided with tuition. See Supply List for student supplies. Projects highlight hand building techniques from basic pinch pots, slab and extruded forms, and wheel work. Demonstrations and resource material will offer inspiration. Develop a new dimension in your work through the exploration of texture, color, and text to use or treat the surface. New ceramics students will be introduced to the studio tools and hand building techniques, while those with studio experience or working on the wheel may advance their craft in preparation to apply new techniques of surface design. Demonstrations in sgraffito, mishima, creating stencils, and underglaze transfers will introduce just some of the many surface treatments the versatility of ceramics offers. • FM101-B: June 21-25 • FM101-E: July 12-16 Chandler Howard Learn the skills needed to make a video on the spot, while using surroundings to help capture a vision. From using a piece of cardboard and tin-foil as a reflector, to adjusting a phone to act as a microphone, the objective of this week-long journey is to teach students how to make videos, short films, documentaries, and video diaries, using only the equipment at hand. This style of independent filmmaking allows the director to work with small crews, and sometimes no crew at all, putting the power in the hands of the filmmaker. This class is for students who like filming on the spot, stretching their experimental style, and learning how to make props from scratch. Join us to learn a fun and spontaneous approach to filmmaking. Basic computer skills required. A digital camera, smartphone, or tablet (iPad) with a video setting option in working condition, and headphones or earbuds are required. Tuition: $215

In this course, students will learn digital video camera operations, scripting and storyboarding, basic lighting, Premiere Pro editing, titles, effects, and montage theory. Students will work in individual directions, choosing from narrative, abstract, or experimental, or to more journalistic or documentary genres. All attendees should complete a well-edited project to use in a portfolio or film festival screening. The course culminates with an in-class screening of students’ final projects. We will combine them using assorted techniques including image transfer, frottage, and layer different mediums such as alternative drawing media, staining and, altering the paper surface, and more. Using mixed media, you may use what you have already learned in art making, but together, we will identify new possibilities for your work to evolve, be creative, and discover your own unique artistic voice. Through photo shoots and in-lab work, this class emphasizes both the technical aspects of the craft as well as creative imagery. You will learn how to use lenses, filters and light, understand aperture and shutter speeds, and how to compose and bracket exposures. This course covers an in-depth review of memory cards, megabytes, optical and digital viewfinders and zoom, as well as menu options, mega pixels, and how to save, move, and organize images. ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS

Karen Arango is an independent photographer, videographer, and black and white gelatin silver printer. She earned her bachelor’s degree in photography and digital imaging from Ringling College of Art and Design and completed the general studies photography program at the International Center of Photography in New York City. Karen was selected as one of the 30 Under 30: Women Photographers by Photo Boite. www.karenarango.com Seth Barendse has been working with clay for the past 22 years. He received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Oregon College of Art and Craft. Seth has taught ceramics at Booker High School Visual Performing Arts Program, workshops at Wildacres Retreat, and Ringling College of Art and Design, and has been a studio manager at State College of Florida, and the Penland School of Art and Craft. www.sethbarendseceramics.com Dorothea Calvert draws inspiration from science, nature, and news. Her MBA in business administration is balanced by art, her muse. Dorothea’s work is in private collections in Florida, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. She studied with international ceramic artists such as Gertrude Smith, Michael Sherrill, Robert Boomer, and Nick Joerling. Jeffery Cornwell studied fine arts at Ringling College of Art and Design. He is an exhibiting painter whose work is represented by galleries in Florida, Texas, and on the west coast of the United States. He has been teaching Teen Studios at Ringling College for 15 years and is the coordinator of the College’s Summer Teen Studio program. www.jefferycornwell.com Rick Dakan lives, writes, and teaches in Sarasota, Florida, his home and native town. He is the author of over forty books, games, and comics and is a professor of creative writing at the Ringling College of Art and Design. He teaches classes on writing for video games, writing for tabletop games, writing comics, the history of game art, and other fun writing genres.

Sylviane De Roquebrune holds an MFA in visual arts, studio arts, and art education from McGill University (Montreal, Canada), and a BFA in studio arts and art education from Concordia University. Her personal objective is to continue to progress and share her knowledge and experiences as a visual and studio arts educator, while also challenging herself in her work as an artist. She encourages and inspires students to discover and enhance their own artistic abilities and creativity. www.sylvianederoquebruneart.com Danielle Dygert, a Sarasota native, earned a BA from New College of Florida in 2016. Within large-scale oil paintings she depicts the physical manifestation of persona. By unraveling her own shifting personas, she explores sexuality, independence, and self-worth. Danielle is currently working on American Mythos- a socio-political project culminating in a 90-foot oil painting. www.danielledygert.com William Ferrell is an award-winning illustrator, graphic designer, and educator. He earned his BFA in illustration at the Ringling School of Art and Design. Later, he would go on to earn his MFA in illustration from the University of Hartford (CT) and study graphic design at Savannah College of Art and Design (GA). Currently, he is the lead graphic designer for Reef Donkey Fishing and instructs Commercial Art at Braden River High School. www.ferrellart.com Louise Gallagher, a certified life coach, retired from a 25-year psychotherapy practice in Modesto (CA). She has appeared on TV, radio, and in local magazines. Louise has a master’s degree in counseling from California State University, Fullerton. She attended both the University of Southern California and the University of the Pacific for doctoral work in counseling. Graciela Giles, originally from Argentina, has been an active watercolorist and teacher for two decades, earning awards from art societies for her sensitive portrayals of landscapes and people. Her paintings are in private collections internationally and in galleries in Florida and North Carolina. She and her husband Herbie Rose were instrumental in the founding of the Village of the Arts in Bradenton.

Chandler Howard earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in film from Ringling College of Art and Design. She has worked on commercial and documentary film projects including, The Dark Night and Dynasty. Chandler is an artist-in-residence teaching at Booker Visual & Performing Arts High School, and has been teaching film for Ringling College PreCollege and public programs since 2017. www.linkedin.com/in/chandler-howard-65104a90 Emily Wells holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in ceramics from University of South Florida. “Emmie” is a local Sarasota artist whose work is focused on developing different methods of surface design. Working with ceramics, Emmie creates clean forms that often include quotes and images together. Utilizing multiple methods of ceramic construction such as hand building, wheel throwing, and mold making she is melding traditional practice with proven and experimental surface treatments to create bold, intricate, and interesting results. Michael White graduated in 1985 from the first Illustration class at Ringling College of Art and Design. His clients have included Marvel Comics, Coca-Cola, Amoco Oil, Delta Airlines, Hyatt Hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, and the Atlantis Resort. He has created art for Sarasota Opera House, Tropicana, Child Protection Agency, Circus Sarasota, Sarasota Magazine, and the Humane Society, and drew caricatures at the 2010 Super Bowl. www.michaeljwhiteart.com Tom Winchester is an artist and art critic. He holds a BFA in photography and an MFA in art criticism from the School of Visual Arts (NY). WHO ARE W E ? We are Ringling College Continuing Studies (RCCS)

S+DA offer visual arts learning experiences for preteens to adults. Designed to engage students of all levels and advance skills, subjects range from painting, drawing, and ceramics to photography, digital illustration, and more. Classes are held online, as well as on the Ringling College Museum Campus and at Ringling College of Art and Design.

OLLI at Ringling College is a member of the prestigious Osher Lifelong Learning Institute network. OLLI programs include courses, workshops, and lectures. Courses are held year-round online and at the Ringling College Museum Campus. OLLI courses are noncredit and based on a liberal arts curriculum. There are no grades and no tests. Courses are offered purely for the joy of learning.

EAC is the Englewood Art Center; located to the south of Sarasota, EAC focuses on education, exhibitions, and events. In addition to four galleries for exhibitions, the EAC houses two well-equipped 2D studio classrooms, a pottery studio, a digital media studio, and a lending library.

Ringling College PreCollege is a 4-week academic residential program for high school students ages 16-18. Students are enrolled in 2 immersion courses for in-depth study with Ringling faculty and 4 core studio courses to build a strong foundation. Students can also attend a series of elective mini-workshops and enjoy a robust Student Life program while on campus. Students who complete the program successfully earn 3-college credits which are fully transferrable.
