REP. BARRAGÁN INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO AID IN RELOCATION OF LPG STORAGE FACILITIES

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Nanette Diaz Barragán (San Pedro) introduced the Safe LPG Storage Act today. The legislation would authorize a federal grant program to fund up to half of the cost of relocating Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage facilities away from homes, schools and other sensitive locations.

“Storage tanks containing millions of gallons of highly combustible fuel don’t belong near schools and homes,” said Rep. Barragán. “The risk is too great should an accident occur. In my community, there is an LPG facility next to a park where children play and near family homes. These tanks don’t belong in our backyards, and we can’t just continue to ignore their existence.”

The Safe LPG Storage Act would provide $500 million for the relocation of qualifying LPG storage facilities. To be eligible under the program, the facility must be located within five miles of a populated area, home, or school.
