ART STREIBER: Managing a Career in Editorial Photography & Beyond

All of Your Questions Answered

Monday, May 7th.  9:00am – 4:00pm

Celebrated photographer Art Streiber returns to PSPF and offers this unique, one-day crash-course on the Business of Editorial Photography. Known as the “Hardest-workin’ photographer in town,” Art Streiber is one of the most widely published photographers working today. No one could possibly be a better choice to offer this unique one-day crash-course on managing an editorial photography business.

Budgets are getting smaller and contracts are getting more restrictive but magazines are still a fantastic showcase for your best work!  This one-day, all-day seminar with editorial, entertainment and commercial photographer Art Streiber, is organized around three essential concepts that will arm you with an up-to-date understanding of the current editorial market and the knowledge to successfully navigate your career.

  • Handling the Shoot: Pre-production, Production & Post Production.
  • Managing your Business:  Put systems in place.  Handle your finances.  Take advantage of downtime.
  • Effective Marketing: The Web, your Portfolio & Promotional Pieces.

Marketing to busy New York photography editors is a very delicate dance.

Just a few of the dozens of questions that will be answered:

– How do I get hired to shoot for a national monthly or weekly?

– What’s the difference between a design director and a creative director?

– Should I sign the magazine’s contract?

– What are editorial budgets like?

– How do I create and negotiate a budget?

– How much money should I have in the bank in order to float my shoots?

– Should I own my own gear?  How much?

– Can I say “no” to an assignment?

– How much homework should I do?

– Is scouting the location important?

– How early should I get to the shoot?

– How many different set ups should I shoot?

– How hard should I edit my imagery?

– Is custom printing or retouching important?

– How does syndication work?

– How do I avoid being pigeon-holed as just one kind of shooter and shoot a variety of subjects?

– How do I shoot new work if I’m not getting assigned to shoot new work?

– Should I put tear sheets on my website?

– How should my portfolio differ from my website?

– When is the best time of year to go to New York and show my work?

– Should I cold call photo editors?

– Do I need a rep?
