4-DAY WORKSHOP

STEPHEN JOHNSON: The Desert Landscape

Orientation Sunday, May 6th, 4:30pm – 5:30pm

Monday, May 7th – Wednesday, May 9th, 9:00am – 4:00pm. Thursday, May 10th 9:00am – 11:00am

Stephen Johnson will lead a special workshop exploring the desert landscape where attendees will make work together in the spectacular landscapes near Palm Springs and its environs. This class is about desert color, organic form and exploration, quiet, and wind, sun, dawn and twilight, star-filled nights and solid photographic information. The light and color will be as much our subject as the land itself.  We will work photographing the ancient palm oasis, the magnificent San Jacinto mountains and desert. Stephen Johnson concentrates on landscape projects exploring wild, endangered spaces and human-altered lands, making images that depict a respect for the land and a real-world celebration of our relationship to nature.

We will headquarter our workshop in our classroom, but go out frequently to photograph. I want to work with you on vision and technique in the field, and back in the classroom on processing. Our field trips will vary in length, distance and time of day. Demonstrations and discussions will include composition, use of the desert’s unique light and color, depth of field, sensor/film characteristics and various field techniques. Digital topics will include exposure, RAW, camera settings and color management.

He has long been admired for his high photographic craft and for his dedication to making fine prints, excelling at sharing his knowledge and passion for our medium with countless individuals.

Steve’s workshops stress understanding the fundamentals of the photographic craft, while constantly discussing the scene elements that are getting your attention, working toward distilling those light-based elements into photographic beauty. Topics always include exercising finesse over camera use, including exposure, depth of field, ISO and color balance. Even advanced students say they come away with a better understanding of the many technical choices available.

We address being aware of movement from wind, the challenges of contrasty light and the nuances of strange color and lighting. Getting the color right is important. Design and composition discussions are constant. Asserting careful control over depth of field is reviewed and encouraged.

Attendees will have ample time to make photographs, and Stephen will critique the work made each day. Spend three + days with this master of the landscape!

Price: $1230.

Includes class transportation and a boxed lunch for each full day of the workshop.
