- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025Good. Good! Got it! Great. Gooood.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2018Against Me is one of those bands that I love and will listen to regularly, but all of a sudden get so “turned off” that I won’t listen to a single song for months. Don’t know why. But this album was definitely the catalyst that brought me back again.
I love their first 3 proper albums, but New Wave was the album I’m on the fence about. Some great songs there, but too overly polished (probably the producer’s fault... who was it again....?). White Crosses is where I lost interest. Nothing that stood out and an overly soft album.
Enter Laura Jane Grace. I’m extremely happy for her, and it’s cool looking back and seeing little hints dropped thru the music towards the inner turmoil that he (at the time) felt about his gender identity. Dysphoria Blues was an extremely honest record, but in the name of semantics, should have been labeled a LJG album.. after all, it wasn’t a traditional AM record in terms of the focus of the songs... but you can always argue that AM IS Tom Gable/Laura Jane Grace.
My been with that album was it was too one note... just like NIN’s Hesitation Marks, every song says the same thing... ironically, BOTH albums by BOTH artists just say “hey, I’m different now” over 12 tracks... but that’s just my opinion. Still a great record.
Now to Shapeshift... second album back on an indie label and it shows. Back to an AM record-focus of various subjects and intense vocals, this album really surprised me. A good 6-7 songs are just as intense as anything from Eternal Cowboy, and just as well written (Dead Rats and Norse Truth come to mind immediately...). Both of Laura Jane Grace’s albums are better than Tom Gable’s last two, that’s for sure. Shapeshift With Me is definitely the stronger, although not the most personal/introspective (so there’s an argument to be made), but it is definitely the best album to start with if you want a good look at where the band has been and where it’s at right now. Definitely way better than it had any right to be, this far into their career.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019Bought for husband. Has been listening to it on repeat. Says he loves all of the songs except one that’s a little more “poppy” than his taste. Otherwise a really great album.
Some of the lyrics are a little hard to understand, but who cares. (I thought one song said, “trash bandit” when it was actually “crash landed” lol.)
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2022not much to say. the white looks really good. love the music. high quality printing on the cover.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2017Another great Against me! album. It is better to take each song individually instead of as a whole but it is a solid listen. Maybe not quite as good as Transgender Dysphoria Blues, but even slightly disappointing Against Me! is better than pretty much anything else out there. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021Yes. It's Against me!!! If you're looking at this, you know you already want it in your ear holes. Buy this record. Buy all the records. Enjoy your records
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2021Hard to find band for a great price
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2016Against Me! continue shapeshifting thier sound. More romantic and a bit softer than TDB. The second half is particularly great. Some of the best lyrics im music right now. If you loved their previous record don't skip on this.

4.0 out of 5 stars AGAINST ME! - SHAPE SHIFT WITH ME

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets better every time you listen
I have to admit to feeling a bit disappointed with this album, the first few spins left a bit of a flat and throwaway collection of songs, nothing seemed to stick and it all felt a bit dull and lacking bite, which I have to say shocked me after enjoying the awesome Transgender Diaspora blues album. Luckily the more you listen to Shape Shift With Me the more everything starts to slot into place and the more subtle melody worms its way into your head. No doubt, this is an album which grows on you.
‘Provision L-3’ Is a punky blast of frantic energy, a true ball of fury which shows the hard edge that against me are capable of. ’12:03’ brings in the melody and shows off the subtle rawness and melody of the vocals. ‘Boyfriend’ has a driving bassline which gives the song a tremendous sense of urgency. ‘Crash’ is a pure sugar rush of a song requiring a good deal of effort to stop yourself dancing like a loon to. ‘Delicate, Petite and Other things I’ll Never be’ is a groovy smoky club sort of number, while ‘333’ is the blast of fresh air you get as you emerge from the darkness into the light of the outside world.
‘Haunting, Haunted, Haunts’ is like some long lost sailing shanty, which is great fun to listen to. ‘Dead Rats’ sees the drums play a prominent role in giving the track its kick. ‘Rebecca’ squealing opening lead introduces a frantic track. ‘Norse Truth’ is a stunning track which has a tremendous groove and its spoken/spat out vocals are brilliant. ‘Suicide Bomber’ almost drone vocals add yet another facet to the growing Against Me armoury. ‘All This (And More)’ is a great closer being both upbeat but also laid back at the same time.
This album needs to be give a chance because it really doesn’t reveal its hand quickly. Also the more rocky feel to the album makes for some quite interesting songs with some huge danceable hooks.
