There’s more than meets the eye happening in Orlando theme parks!
🔍 Our UCF Department of Anthropology was part of this year’s American Foreign Academic Research (AFAR)’s Maya at the Mouse meeting, a unique conference held this past month at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort that brought together Maya archaeologists, museologists, filmmakers, and theme park designers to explore the ways the Maya past is presented to people.
Associate Professor of Anthropology Brigitte Kovacevich, PhD shared foundational knowledge of Maya society through her presentation, “A Historical Path of Discovery and Understanding of the Ancient Maya.” Associate Professor of Anthropology Michael G. Callaghan, Ph.D. also presented on “A Day in the Life of a Classic Period Maya” through a tour of art, iconography, and archaeology in telling the story of Maya life.
Our UCF Anthropology Department faculty were in great company alongside presenters, including:
- Dr. Jaime Awe, University of Northern Arizona (archaeologist)
- Dr. Marc Zender, Tulane University (archaeologist and Maya epigrapher)
- Dr. George Bey, Millsaps College (archaeologist)
- Joe Rhode, Walt Disney Imagineering (retired)
- Joan Hartwig, Walt Disney Imagineering (executive creative director)
- Dr. Alejandra Alonso, National Institute of Anthropology and History in Mexico (archaeologist and conservator)
- Dr. Victoria Lyall, Jan Mayer Curator, Art of the Ancient Americas at the Denver Art Museum (archaeologist and art historian)
- Mat Saunders, American Foreign Academic Research (AFAR) at Davidson Day School (organizer)
- Dr. Adofo Ivan Batun-Alpache, Universidad de Oriente in Valladolid, Yucatan (archaeologist).
Thanks to Dr. Callaghan and Dr. Kovacevich for sharing their knowledge of the Maya in this forum of experts.
