2025 Measles Outbreak Guidance

Overview

Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can cause fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that spreads over the body. Serious complications can occur, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death.

The best way to prevent getting sick is to be immunized against measles. Two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine are highly effective at preventing measles.

Reports

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is reporting an outbreak of measles originating in Lea County, near Gaines County, Texas. The table below provides the latest case numbers. Because measles is highly contagious, additional cases are likely to occur.

We will post updates on Tuesdays and Fridays by noon Mountain Standard Time if there are new cases to report.

Friday, April 25 from 9-noon and 1-4 p.m.; Wednesday. April 30, from 1-3 p.m., and Fridays, May 2, 23, and 30 from 1-4 p.m., the Santa Fe Public Office, 605 Letrado Street will be accepting walk-in MMR vaccinations with no appointment necessary. (505) 476-2600.
Wednesdays, April 23 and 30, from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. the Grants (Cibola County) Public Health Office, 700 East Roosevelt Ave. will be hosting MMR clinics with no appointment necessary. (505) 285-4601.

Wednesdays in April, the Las Vegas Public Health Office, 18 Gallegos Road will be accepting walk-in MMR vaccinations with no appointment necessary. (505) 425-9368.
