Sara Raza's 'Punk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion' launched on November 10th
ITP Adjunct Professor, Sara Raza, launched her new book Punk Orientalism: The Art of Rebellion on November 10th. The book explores art and ideas of resistance pertaining to the former Soviet Union focussing on Central Asia the Caucasus during and after the Cold War and extending to examine the USSR's complex relationship with the Arab world, Iran and Turkey by proxy.
The book is quite experimental and zigzags between art, history, geography and conceptual thought, and is entirely culled from 16 years of my curatorial practice, and helps provide context to what is currently happening in Afghanistan, Iran and the Ukraine from nuanced and poetic artist driven perspectives.
