Lynn MaddoxWhat department do you work in and what is your job title?

Division of Government and Community Relations – Special Project Director and Community Liaison

How long have you been a Vanderbilt employee?

20 years – started with the Division of Development and Alumni Relations in the Reunion Office and the Divinity School and then became part of the Division of Public Affairs with Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory.  It was my honor during this time, to have served for two years as President of the Vanderbilt Woman’s Club, an organization founded in 1893 by Chancellor Kirkland’s wife Mary.

What has been your career journey to lead you to where you are today?

Volunteered with the Newcomb College of Tulane University Alumnae Office while in college and then was hired to work there after I graduated. That led to my career in the field of education with colleges and universities.  Both of my grandparents were teachers so I learned at an early age that knowledge and education are the basis for all that can be accomplished. Teachers provide the power of education by giving the opportunity for a better life.  I am honored to support the work of those who educate.

What do you enjoy most about Vanderbilt? The Campus – we are a National Arboretum, and we have several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Past – Vanderbilt has a rich history beginning in 1873.  Our past is central to our strength and identity.  We are a university which is forever changing yet distinctive and unique to the extent in which we preserve it.

The People – we are caring, passionate, dedicated, supportive, professional, and talented.  Everyone contributes in diverse and meaningful ways and is a valuable member of the community – the Vanderbilt Way!

What is the greatest bit of advice a parent or mentor has given you?

Mother – Always do your best.

What is one important skill every person should have?

Ability to Listen

What is the best perk you have ever had at a job?

I do not know about best perk – but a very special assignment in my early days at Vanderbilt – in order to learn the history of Vanderbilt – were weekly visits with former Chancellor Harvie Branscomb from 1993 until his death in 1998.  He was a wonderful storyteller and he shared lots of stories – good and bad; happy and sad.

I am a morning person!  The pandemic taught us a lot of things and one of them was certainly adjusting to different schedules.

If you could visit any country with no budget, where would you visit?

Lima, Peru

What has been your favorite vacation you have ever been on?

Past – Teamed up with several songwriters in bringing a children’s album to life which was

nominated for a Grammy Award.
