Applications are now open for our Atlas Artist Residency, one of the only paid artist residency programs in the country for high school artists.

Calling all aspiring young artists! ART 180 is thrilled to announce its fourth annual Atlas Artist Residency Program, and we are looking for 10 talented teen artists.  This eight-week summer artist residency is designed to be a transformative experience, allowing young artists to hone their craft while collaborating with seasoned professional artists in an inspiring and collaborative studio environment.

This year applications are open to high school students currently in the 9th, 10th, and 11th grades in Richmond and its surrounding counties, with priority given to RPS and BIPOC students. In honoring ART 180’s 5 Guiding Principles –holistic health, connection to self and others, creative development, social entrepreneurship, self-actualization– the program is designed to use art as a vehicle to foster mindfulness and health practices, social entrepreneurship and creative development through workshops, site visits to art, museums, galleries, and nature explorations. Youth artists selected for the program will be awarded personal art studio space, program stipend, and materials, along with opportunities to expand their portfolio of work and bolster their resume/CV for college applications.

In addition, we are excited to announce that the teen artists selected will undergo the mentorship of Resident Teaching Artists (RTA), Xolani Sivunda from Cape Town, Africa, and Nastassja Swift from Richmond, VA.

At the end of the residency, artists will collaborate on a community project and showcase their process and final artwork in a final exhibition for the larger community at  ART 180s on the first Friday in August. The residency will take place from June 11 through August 6, Tuesdays and Thursdays, held in ART 180's Atlas Gallery, 114 W Marshall St.

An advisory committee will review all completed applications and conduct an interview process with program candidates to determine which artists will be selected for the residency program.

All applicants are required to submit examples of their artwork when completing the application.
