Art Habens Art Review

Open Call To celebrate our ten years long successful activity, we are launching a special biennial edition, that will once again explore new tendencies and trends in Contemporary Art. ART Habens offers a unique opportunity to get featured in the next special issue of our publication. The competition is open to all artists, both national and international: each applicant may submit a maximum of three works or projects made in any technique.

This year’s edition will focus on a recurrent paradox in contemporary art: the vague and ambiguous but thoroughly entrenched boundaries between the different practices of new media. In particular it will engage with artists dealing with process-driven changes in our society, who pair their observations with new media technologies to produce their art projects.

This competition aims to give the impetus and opportunity to artists to work between the boundaries of Contemporary Art. ART Habens aims to engage artists, curators and gallerists in conversation about the role of Art in contemporary society.

There are no entry fees for submissions and only selected artists will be required of a small participation fee that will cover administrative costs.

'Art Publications from Start to Finish' Online Course by Node Center

Art books and catalogues are increasingly important as a site where contemporary art carries out its discourses and activities. They are integral parts of exhibitions and indeed can be considered artworks themselves in the case of artist's books and editions.This course takes the participants through various types of publications before looking in detail at each of the key stages of producing an exhibition catalogue, from looking at funding possibilities, sample publication budgets, contracts and permissions, as well as at ways of giving a publication a life through promotion and marketing before looking at distribution. The course outlines each stage in the exciting and challenging process of publishing.

International artists create a two-day high-energy event with an international context by presenting their work in an hourly schedule throughout the weekend.The actions follow creating a connection between the public open space of the Schillerkiez with the private indoor space of Luisa Catucci Gallery. Andrew Salgado has been hailed as one of the most promising young figurative painters working today, riding atop 11 sold-out exhibitions, and being endorsed by critics like Tony Godfrey, Edward Lucie-Smith, and more. Saatchi Art calls him "one to invest in now"; and Artsy states he 'complicates portraiture [with] a sense of frailty and potency'.

He has been featured in GQ, the Evening Standard, The Independent, METRO, The Globe and Mail (CAN), Macleans (CAN), and more. In 2015 Salgado curated The Fantasy of Representation at Beers London, including work by Francis Bacon, Gary Hume, and Hurvin Anderson. He is featured in 100 Painters of Tomorrow, (Thames & Hudson, 2014), and is subject of a 2015 documentary He frequently gives to charities, including Terrence Higgins Trust.

The poetry film Was Being Moved? (2011) takes the form of a series of postcards to a "Mr. Parade," interspersed with vignettes of public rituals and street life in Chicago, New York City, and Taiwan. It features music composed and played by Taiwanese musician Yujun Wang.Through collaging her words and images, she improvises a new landscape, trying to erase the border between poetry and image making. A bilingual chapbook of her poems was recently published by Anomalous Press under the title His Days Go by the Way Her Years (2013).In his 1976 series of Artforum articles, "Inside the White Cube," Brian O'Doherty made the simple but powerful claim that the art gallery is not a neutral context.

What is the nature of a mimicked object, especially when the object that ceases to serve its categorical imperative? When we remove an object from its context, how does its meaning change—and how can we then designate its function? Vancouver artist Charlotte Spafford tackles the Ship of Theseus problem of the art object in her project Precious Things, a collection of items imbued with sentimentality and emotion by loved ones and strangers alike, then recreated in Charlotte's own style.

Tanja Mosblech's most recent works are serving as the occasion for her first solo exhibition at the IKOB – Museum of Contemporary Art.Her work is based on the blurred boundaries between reality and illusion, figuration and abstraction. Her overpainted women's bodies, which heretofore were present in the picture as faceless beings, tend to disappear more and more in this new series. The abstract surfaces which for the most part surrounded and framed these figures convey the impression of now having made themselves autonomous. In Mosblech's paintings, the figures look like optical illusions amid Nature.In her oeuvre, the artist thematises in a surprising and multifaceted manner the development of life – the 'primal soup', as Tanja Mosblech calls it.

EVENT Rhizome Presents: Internet as Poetry

On December 4, 2011, Bunny Rogers uploaded an image of a rose to cunny4.tumblr.com; six months later, she began to post short poems to it on a regular basis. Five years ago, internet artist Kevin Bewersdorf took all of his images, music, and texts offline, changed his name to Kev, and published a new website featuring only an image of a flickering flame. He writes slowly, holding the ideas inside for long periods of time until they crystallize.
Rhizome public programs receive major support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support is provided by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts.

April 29th 2017, 6-9pm, SomoS presents “Could that last sentence be the title?” – a multi media concert performance, short film screening and book launch by artist Natusha Croes (Aruba), who has been an artists in residence at SomoS for the last three months.

The Caribbean artist has been developing experimental musical instruments relating to architectural space and employing a means of composing that requires body and movement. She creates soundscapes that originate from spoken word pieces that she reads out like a personal journey through her work, using explorative methods as a means of reflection and revelation.

FOCUS Transmediale 2015: Why we need spaces for art and tech beyond corporate influence by Elvia Wilk

True to its title, "Capture All," the program of this year's transmediale festival in Berlin was ambitiously panoramic, with such a marathon, round-the-clock schedule that by the last day a number of attendees had come down with the same cold.

Separated into the thematic tracks of Work, Play, and Life, the events revolved around the quantification of everyday activities, mass data acquisition, algorithmic sorting of information about people and the planet, and the systems of power and control implicit in all of those processes—topics in which most of the festival's target audience is well-versed. KMD – Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp | The Forestay Museum of Art

Essentially, Tom Hackney's Chess Paintings, which are based on the great chess games of Marcel Duchamp, make conceptual reference to two significant texts of the 20th century, one being Duchamp's famous 'preface' to The Large Glass (1915–1923), which he wrote on a slip of paper around 1915 and later, in 1934, published in the Green Box. Tom Hackney's paintings start on the one hand out from Duchamp's games of chess and, on the other, give a new, post-avant-garde dimension to the paintings of the Zürich Concrete artists around Max Bill and Richard Paul Lohse.

FOCUS Retweeting Fiction by Brendan C. Byrde

On the morning of January 8th, Teju Cole published a fiction in the form of 33 tweets, each posted from the account of a different "collaborator," and then retweeted sequentially by Cole. Titled "Hafiz," it took three hours and fifteen minutes to be published. Like most of Cole's experiments in Twitter publishing, it generated much more social media heat than actual critique. (There are a few notable exceptions.) But "Hafiz," both as a story and presentation, is worth examining, as it is both the closest tejucole has come to Teju Cole's fiction and a singular commentary on it.This is not Cole's first foray into Twitter publishing. "Small Fates" (2011-2013).

Exhibition Identity - Expression Through Multiple Mediums

"My inspiration for this project was Danah Boyd's idea of "Identity Performance" and how identity can be expressed online through text, image, audio and video. Identity as a form of self expression has, over time, succumbed to society's stereotypical notions of what the "perfect" identity should be(What the perfect image of oneself should be).
First of all, what does the politics of identity entail? How a person looks, acts, or what a person does. These notions are constantly changing and what today may be considered as beautiful and is excepted, tomorrow it may be rejected. In any case, the way identity is expressed will always evolve and what we hold to be the ideal identity, will change as well.

New York-based Japanese artist Mariko Mori (b.1967) discussed her solo exhibition at the Japan Society, Rebirth: Recent Work by Mariko Mori. Best known for her performances, installations, and videos, her works focus on alternative interpretations of self and the exploration of space, spirituality, technology, and the various factors that influence the viewer’s perception of identity.
For this exhibition, Mori has created her own cosmic environment throughout the entire gallery space, complete with 35 multimedia artworks. The artist also discusses her performance related to the sculptural installation Ring,which was created in the indoor garden of the Japan Society.

Jenny Saville is joined in conversation with Nicholas Cullinan, Curator, Tate Modern. This very special event is a rare opportunity to hear the artist discuss her recent practice in the context of the exhibition at Modern Art Oxford.

British artist Jenny Saville (1970), one of the Young British Artists, deconstructs the stereotypes of beauty and eroticism of the female body as seen through art and through men, and then broadens them. She experiments with obese women and changes in the body, but above all she uses her own body as a model and means of reflection. She reveals the natural beauty of the individuality of the women she paints, and her own. This defines her artistic language as much as her traditional pictorial technique. Figures are the sole focus of attention of her huge canvasses, which often cannot contain the whole figure in the same way that our selves cannot control our bodies.

Her painting and her skill at drawing spawn a multiplicity of realities that build movement. The Broad, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.

Artist Nick Cave spent several days installing his solo exhibition at the ICA Boston in February. While he was here, we asked him about the evolution of his newest works, the surprising inspiration behind his legendary Soundsuits, and what it feels like to put one on.

Nick Cave creates “Soundsuits”—surreally majestic objects blending fashion and sculpture—that originated as metaphorical suits of armor in response to the Rodney King beatings and have evolved into vehicles for empowerment. Fully concealing the body, the “Soundsuits” serve as an alien second skin that obscures race, gender, and class, allowing viewers to look without bias towards the wearer’s identity. The artist also works with choreographers, dancers, and amateur performers to produce lavish community celebrations in untraditional venues for art.

Dazzling in their movement, Cave’s sculptures are crafted in collaboration with artisans from a dizzying array of materials that include beads, raffia, buttons, sequins, twigs, fur, and fabric.
