PROJECT BACKGROUND:

About Bogue Chitto State Park

At Bogue Chitto State Park, located in Franklinton, Louisiana, visitors experience a diversity of natural habitats on one of the most dynamic and scenic river systems in Louisiana. The 1,786-acre site includes small streams, cypress tupelo swamps, a hardwood forest, upland forests and a rolling landscape. The slow-moving river is perfect for a day of floating with the family, coursing through unexpected canyons past pebble-strewn natural beaches. Highlights include horseback riding through the cypress and tupelo swamps (dedicated horse trails exist throughout the park). Freshwater fishing is just one way to have fun on the water; a water playground and –during the summer – kayak, tube and canoe rentals are also available.

Overnight visitors are in for a treat. Due to its remote location on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain, stargazing at Bogue Chitto State Park is spectacular. Fully appointed deluxe cabins (sleeping up to eight people) deluxe lodges (sleeping up to 14) and group camps (sleeping up to 52) make this park well-suited for family reunions and group getaways. Intrepid travelers will find dozens of campsites, and RV campers have their pick of parking spots. Water and electrical hookups are available.

About the Public Art Site at the Kids Trail

The Kids Trail at Bogue Chitto State Park will serve to connect children and families to nature through environmental education and recreation featuring entertaining hands-on outdoor discovery experiences such as: a pollinator attracting sensory garden, an animal Olympics, a swinging bridge, and a hardwood creative play area. Each of these activities center around a specific point along the trail, and each will be associated with one or more native animal species including but not limited to the butterfly, fox, squirrel, bat, turtle, black bear, mole, heron, snake, and alligator.

Animal themed sculptures or sculptural installations will become integral components at each of these points along the Kids Trail that performs such functions as: interpreting its themes, providing hands-on experiences, or expressively representing the abundant fauna of Bogue Chitto. One or more artists or artist teams may be selected for consideration to design and implement approximately six (6) exterior, site-specific sculptures or installations of original design. Existing artwork will also be reviewed for consideration.
