Join us for a panel discussion between four scholars on criminal law scholarship, including the background, work and influence of pioneering scholars in Australia’s recent legal history.
From the early philosophical and psychological work of eminent criminal law scholar Professor Peter Brett, to the first criminal law textbooks in the mid-20th century, and to the work of emerged and emerging scholars of today, this discussion will cover significant ground and provide some fascinating insights into where our criminal law traditions come from and where they might go in the decades ahead.
Questions will be taken from audience members.
The Sydney Institute of Criminology welcomes Dr Susan Bartie of University of Tasmania, who is a legal historian. Dr Bartie is the author of the book Free Hands and Minds: Pioneering Australian Legal Scholars which examines the lives and work of three Australians on the margins who became legal academics and profoundly shaped legal education and scholarship in the 20th century and beyond.
Dr Bartie will be in discussion with Professor Simon Bronitt, Dean of Sydney Law School and a leading Australian criminal law scholar, and Professor Arlie Loughnan of the University of Sydney. As part of her book on criminal responsibility Self, Others and the State: Relations of Criminal Responsibility, Professor Loughnan examined the first Australian criminal law textbooks published from the 1940s to 1960s.
Mr Josh Pallas, University of Sydney PhD candidate and researcher in post-sentence detention and supervision regimes for ex-prisoners, will provide a response to the discussion. Co-Director of the Sydney Institute of Criminology Co-Director and Colin Phegan Senior Lecturer, Dr Andrew Dyer, will chair the event.
Each of the panellists offer a unique vantage point for the landscape of criminal law scholarship. This event will be of interest to anyone who studies criminal law, criminology, or Australian legal scholarship, or who is pursuing a career in legal academia.
