inSTEM Mentorship/Coach Evaluation Form

The Office of Undergraduate Research is seeking to hire a coach for UTA STEM scholars in the inSTEM mentorship program. This cohort are currently in their third year at UT Arlington. The inSTEM Coach leads a cohort of 15-30 undergraduate STEM students at UTA and works with the National Science and Technology Medals Foundation (NSTMF) to develop and deliver holistic support to the Scholars in the program. The coach's commitments include attending trainings, managing correspondence with students, facilitating bi-weekly inSTEM sessions, one-on-one check-ins with students and completion of check-in surveys, biweekly feedback meetings with NSTMF personnel and/or University department head/coordinators, planning and coordination of venue rental and catering of in-person meetings, scholar recruitment, and participation in scholar socials. Overall, the coach’s responsibilities fall into three major categories: facilitation, mentorship, and development. Additional details are below:

FACILITATION
• Facilitates engaging and meaningful discussion around enrichment curriculum with Scholars at bi-weekly meetings throughout the academic year.
• Identifies standing meeting time(s) based upon Scholar schedules and shares times with the program manager, who will coordinate with guest speaker availability.
• Coordinates and schedules all venue rental, relevant A/V capabilities, and catering to host inSTEM meetings.
• Engages with Scholars via Slack and email communication to send meeting reminders, relevant opportunities, resources, and announcements.
• Assists in coordinating travel and support arrangements for all visiting speakers.

MENTORSHIP
• Provides expertise as an academic and career mentor inside and outside of regular inSTEM meetings to holistically support Scholars.
• Works with Scholars to empower and advance their careers.
• Helps prepare Scholars for mentorship, research, and internship opportunities.
• Connects Scholars with mentorship, research, and internship opportunities.
• Supports Scholars in applications for scholarships, fellowships, and grants.

DEVELOPMENT
• Consults in the development of materials for engaging meetings with students based on student needs and feedback.
• Improves the design of these workshops to enrich the Scholars' experience.
• Assists with recruitment by sharing inSTEM information with prospective Scholars.
• Attends necessary training workshops if needed to build other expertise that is focused on student success.
• Attends planning meetings with NSTMF to discuss cohort activities, identify other coaches and work with other cohorts' Coaches to plan for continuity and alignment of learning outcomes for all four years of the inSTEM program.
• Determines whether or not the inSTEM cohort members are eligible for additional stipend based upon attainment of a quality engagement “benchmark.” This benchmark will be developed in coordination with NSTMF’s inSTEM Director.
• Assists with recruitment by sharing inSTEM information with prospective students.

*THIS POSITION MAY REQUIRE THAT YOU WORK AFTER HOURS (EVENINGS AND SOME WEEKENDS)

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree
• 3+ years experience in mentoring, advising, or executing educational programming for undergraduate students
• Able to advocate for undergraduate students and create inclusive learning spaces

Preferred Qualifications
• Graduate degree or research experience in STEM/STEM education or educational leadership, administration, or policy
• Knowledge of research/internship opportunities and resources for undergraduate STEM students
• Prior experience working with inSTEM or with STEM students generally
