Puget Sound to induct four individuals, one team, into the Athletics Hall of Fame

TACOMA, Washington - Puget Sound Athletics is pleased to announced that four individuals, and one team, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this fall. The induction ceremony will take place during Homecoming & Family Weekend, Oct. 6-8. 

WOMEN'S CREW 2003
Puget Sound  women's crew was the NCAA D-III runner-up during the 2003 national championships. The varsity-eight boat crossed the finish line in the grand final with a time of 6:47.68, more than one full second ahead of the third-place boat. Puget Sound's championship participants included: Chelsea Athing, Laura Bechdel, Frazier Benya, Kira Doley, Robin Francis, Maggie Halmo, Jennifer Jura, Amanda Karr, Katie Koch, Ashley Lauth, Jessica McCullough, Hailey Noble, Lindsay Rue, Jennifer Saunders, Erin Schneider, Britta Strother, Anna Terry, Elizabeth Wilbur, Asia Wright, Katlin Wiedeman.
 
 
BRIAN BRENDEL '91
Brian Brendel is a two-time track & field All-American (decathlon), and he graduated with two school records. Brendel set the school in the men's 400-m intermediate hurdles (52.6 seconds), and his decathlon score of 6756 remains a Puget Sound record at the time of his Hall of Fame induction. Brendel is a recipient of three Puget Sound Athletics awards, including the Ben Cheney Award for Most Outstanding Male Student-Athlete in 1990-91.  
 
 
DANITA ERICKSON '94
Danita Erickson is a national champion and five-time All-American. In 1994, she won the NAIA national title in the women's 1,500-m, crossing the finish line in 4:29.39. She also placed fourth in the 1993 NAIA Women's Cross Country Championships. Erickson earned All-American status in the 1500-m, 800-m (twice), and cross country (twice). She was Puget Sound's recipient of the Alice Bond Award for Most Outstanding Female Student-Athlete in 1994-95.
 
 
JEFF HALSTEAD '00
Jeff Halstead graduated as a record-setting student-athlete in two sports. He graduated as the football program's all-time leading receiver, and he was the baseball program's all-time leading hitter. At the time of his Hall of Fame induction, Halstead still holds Puget Sound baseball records for career stolen bases (66), single-season batting average (.449), and single-season hits (66). After graduating from Puget Sound, Halstead played professional baseball in the Frontier League. He later returned to Tacoma to serve as an assistant coach for both the Logger football and baseball programs for several years. Halstead took over as the baseball head coach starting in the 2014-15 academic year.
 
 
JULIE VANNI '02
Julie Vanni is a two-time All-Northwest Conference student-athlete in two different sports: women's basketball and track & field. She was a basketball NAIA All-American in 1998-1999, and that same year she was named the Player of the Year for the Pacific Northwest Independent Region. Vanni graduated as Puget Sound's fourth all-time leading scorer. At that point, she also ranked third all-time in rebounds (884) and third in made free-throws (349). In addition to her two all-conference basketball accolades, Vanni was twice named all-conference for the heptathlon.
