“Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, Your love has come here to dwell.” The coming of the Messiah, Emmanuel (which means “God with us”) happened in a very special way. The Lord told the prophet Isaiah, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and she shall call his name Emmanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14) The savior of the world came as a child, meek and lowly. But the hope he awakens and the peace he restores draws from God’s people songs of wonder and gladness. The birth of this baby, given to a world-weary people, is an intimate gift filled with joy and newness.

Rejoice. God has come near. May our celebration of Christmas be marked by comfort and joy as we see the beauty of God’s great affection for His creation wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. May our worship of Christ “join the happy chorus which the morning stars began.” Come, adore Christ for the peace and joy He brings.
