Oklahoma Wheat Commission Calling State's 2019 Wheat Harvest 85 Percent Complete

Oklahoma Wheat harvest has continue to make great progress the past week with producers moving full speed ahead in Northern regions of the state along the Oklahoma/Kansas state line. Harvest has been completed in most all areas of Southwest Oklahoma, and in the Central regions. Even in the lower lying areas near Chickasha and El Reno, producers have made great strides. Harvest has progressed slower in Northeast Oklahoma with the continued moisture over the past few weeks, but as of today wheat harvest is being called half way finished around the Afton and Miami areas. Moving to the opposite end of the state in the far Northwest region of the Panhandle toward Boise City, harvest is reported halfway completed. If producers can get the next 3 to 4 days in the field without moisture, the 2019 Oklahoma wheat harvest should be mostly complete. The quality of the crop as well as yields continue to surprise farmers given all the moisture it has received during this harvest season. Test weights have dropped in Central and Northern regions across Oklahoma. Based on reporting from elevator managers and producers, it is looking like the statewide average on test weights will be in the 58 lb. to 59 lb. per bushel range. Yields being reported across the state also have been favorable with several reports of wheat making in the mid 40's to mid 50's. Reports of some extremely good yields around the Bison, Waukomis, Enid areas, as well as in Goltry and Helena are also coming in. It is important to note that early evaluations on functionality characteristics from the USDA Hard Winter Wheat Quality Milling Lab in Manhattan, Kansas, are showing positive results on samples currently being tested from the Southern regions of Oklahoma. Protein quantities and qualities have been higher than expected and are trending higher in Oklahoma as harvest has progressed North. Kernel size and overall quality regarding test weights are favorable on the wheat that was harvested in Southwest Oklahoma as well as in parts of Northwest and Panhandle regions of the state. While test weights and proteins have ranged all over the board, most elevator locations have been pleased with the overall averages on both test weight and protein. As of today, Oklahoma is looking at protein averages in the 11.3 to 11.8 percent range. The Oklahoma Wheat Commission is calling harvest on this 1st day in July, 85 percent completed.
"I think we finally are catching up. USDA as of today has us at 72 percent," said Mike Schulte, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, in a recent interview with Radio Oklahoma Ag Network Farm Director Ron Hays. "Based on calls I have made with the elevator industry and producers across northern Oklahoma today, I think we're closer to 85 percent being complete in the state and I think if we get three or four more days, we'll be able to wrap this up. We've really made great progress over the last six or seven days."

Kingfisher/ Omega/Watonga- Harvest is 90 to 95 percent complete. Test weights for the region will average 59 lbs. Proteins are ranging from 10.8 to 11.8 percent. Yields have been favorable in most all areas with several reports in the mid 40's to mid 50's depending on variety and location.
Enid-Harvest in this region on the West side of town is 90 percent complete and East of Enid is 85 percent complete. Proteins have ranged all over the board but have been trending higher at 11.2 to 11.6 percent for the average. Test weights are ranging all over the board depending on variety and location. Currently 58 lbs. per bushel is the average. Yields have ranged from the mid 30's to the mid 60's.
Helena/Goltry- This region has performed extremely well with test weights averaging 60 to 61 lbs. per bushel. Proteins have also been favorable in this area with a lot in the 12 to 13 percent range being reported. Yields are ranging from the mid 30's to mid 70's. Harvest in this area is 90 to 95 percent complete.
Kremlin-This area is reporting harvest to be 90 percent complete. Test weights have gone down slightly, but they are hoping the area average will still be in the 57 lb. to 58 lb. per bushel range. Yields are ranging from the mid 40's to lower 50's. Protein ranges reported are from 12 to 13 percent.
Perry/Tonkawa/Kildare- Harvest in this region has made great strides the last couple days and is 75 percent complete. The test weights are all over the board with some in the low 50's. The region is hopeful they can come in with a 56 lb. per bushel average. Yields are still favorable with a lot of wheat being reported in the mid 40's to mid 50's depending on variety and location. Proteins being reported from 10.5 percent to 13 percent.
Cherokee/Burlington-Harvest in this area is 70 to 80 percent complete. Test weights in this region on wheat harvested today is ranging from 58 lbs. to 62 lbs. per bushel, depending on the location and variety. Yields are being reported from the mid 40s to low 50's. Proteins are ranging from 11.3 percent to 12.3 percent.
Afton/Miami-Harvest has made great strides considering all the past rains this harvest season. Today harvest is ½ completed. Test weights have dropped significantly, they are hopeful for a 56 lb. to 57lb. per bushel average. Yields on early cuttings have ranged from 20 to 50 bushels per acre. Proteins are ranging from 10.8 to 11 percent.
Hooker- Harvest in this area is 60 percent complete on the dryland, with some producers starting in the irrigated wheat production. Yields on the dryland and irrigated wheat have ranged from 50 to 75 bushels per acre depending on the variety and location. This year they are not seeing much yield difference between the irrigated and dryland wheat. Test weights are ranging from 61 to 63 lbs. per bushel. Proteins in this region are ranging from 10.2 to 10.5 percent.
Boise City-Harvest in this area is 50 percent complete. Yields have been ranging from the mid 40's to mid 50's for the most part on the dryland wheat, with some reports making in the mid 60's. Test weights are ranging from 61 to 63 lbs. per bushel. Proteins are averaging 11 percent.
