Initiate a Faculty-Led Program

Are you interested in running a study abroad program? We work with faculty and departments across the university to provide administrative and logistical support for all types of programs to encourage a diverse range of students to study abroad and provide support to first-time international travelers.

Program Types

May Term Abroad

May Term Abroad programs are three to four-weeks in duration and offer students three or four-credit-hour courses. Programs take place during the May Term, which starts after Spring Term exams.

Summer Abroad

Summer programs may be offered in the first, second, or whole summer session. The number of courses per program may vary, but summer programs typically offer two courses and six hours of credit. Some exceptions may include programs that offer only one course and three credits. To qualify for financial aid in the summer, however, students must take a minimum of six credits total over the Summer Term.

Fall or Spring Abroad

Fall or Spring programs are full-term semesters abroad. They offer at least 12 hours of coursework.

Departmentally-Administered Faculty-Led Programs

Many departments, colleges and schools administer study abroad programs independent of Texas Global. For example, the College of Liberal Arts, Cockrell School of Engineering and the McCombs School of Business are well known for their exceptional programs. Texas Global also supports departmentally-administered faculty-led (DAFL) programs. Learn more about proposing a DAFL program or contact Keelan Apthorpe at keelan.apthorpe@austin.utexas.edu

Programs in Restricted Regions

Certain regions are subject to the UT System Restricted Regions Travel Policy. The Texas Global Risk and Safety team is responsible for informing students and faculty participating in and leading study abroad programs regarding University Policy on International Travel to Restricted Regions. If you are proposing a program in a country with a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning, please review this policy prior to submitting your proposal.

Global Virtual Exchange

Global Virtual Exchange contributes to The University of Texas at Austin’s goal to internationalize the curriculum, offers students an on-campus international experience, deepens existing and/or creates new international partnerships, and integrates innovative teaching practices across disciplines.

Global Virtual Exchange courses are taught by UT faculty and peers at international institutions to foster project-based or problem-based Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Virtual exchanges foster collaboration between students and faculty, thereby enhancing the learning experience through diverse pedagogical approaches. Applicants may apply for a Development or Implementation grant.
