Buffalo racist attack: White supremacist ideology is 'big business' and is a 'global problem'

The 18-year-old gunman accused of a deadly racist rampage at a Buffalo supermarket seems to fit an all-too-familiar profile: an aggrieved white man steeped in hate-filled conspiracies online, and inspired by other extremist massacres. While law enforcement officials have grown adept since the Sept. 11 attacks at disrupting well-organized plots, they face a much tougher challenge in intercepting self-radicalized young men who absorb racist screeds on social media and plot violence on their own. And compounding the problem is the epidemic of gun violence in America. According to the US non-profit Gun Violence Archive, the United States is already reeling from 200+ mass shootings in the first five months of 2022 alone. In the wake of Buffalo's deadly mass shooting, FRANCE 24 is joined by Dr. Crystal Fleming: Author, Critical Race Sociologist, and Professor of Sociology and Africana Studies at Stony Brook University in New York.
