GW’s location, in the heart of the nation’s capital, provides a unique advantage to educating and preparing its students to solve the world’s biggest challenges. Join us for a discussion featuring GW alumni global leaders, who will share how their GW experiences influenced their work, and what GW can do to prepare the next generation of citizen leaders to address these challenges and remain in the forefront of international leadership.

The Honorable David Burt, GWSB BBA ’01, MS ’03, is Bermuda’s youngest Premier and was originally elected to office in July 2017. An entrepreneur, Premier Burt started GMD Consulting Limited, an IT consulting company focusing on project management. He served as President from its inception until 2016 when he stepped down upon being appointed Leader of the Opposition. Premier Burt co-founded HITCH Limited and was the lead developer for the award-winning HITCH Mobile App enabling Bermuda Residents to hail taxis. 

His Excellency Dr. Anwar Gargash, CCAS BA ’81, MA ’84, is Diplomatic Adviser to His Highness the President of the United Arab Emirates, as of February 2021. He was appointed Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs in 2006. In February 2008, Dr. Gargash was given the additional responsibilities of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and in February 2016, he was appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. In addition to his ministerial portfolio, Dr. Gargash was Chairman of the National Elections Committee, overseeing the UAE’s first elections which took place in 2006 and the subsequent elections in 2011 and 2015. 

Rose Gottemoeller, ESIA MA ’81, is the Payne Distinguished Lecturer at Stanford University’s Institute for International Studies and its Center for International Security and Cooperation. Before joining Stanford, Ms. Gottemoeller was the Deputy Secretary General of NATO from 2016-19. Previously, she served for nearly five years as the Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security at the U.S. State Department. While Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance in 2009 and 2010, she was the chief U.S. negotiator of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) with the Russian Federation.

Moderator: Ambassador Edward Gnehm, ESIA BA ’66, MA ’68, has served as Kuwait Professor of Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Affairs at GW's Elliott School of International Affairs since August 2006. He also serves as director fo the Middle East Policy Forum at the Institute for Middle East Studies. Prior to joining the Elliott School, Ambassador Gnehm had a distinguished 36-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, serving as U.S. Ambassador to Jordan, Australia, and Kuwait, among other positions. Ambassador Gnehm was a member of the GW Board of Trustees for seven years, and also served as vice president of the former GW Alumni Association.
