Morgan Wallen’s ‘7 Summers’ Soars In Atop Hot Country Songs Chart: ‘I Can’t Wait to See What Else It Does’

Morgan Wallen‘s “7 Summers” blasts in atop Billboard‘s airplay-, sales- and streaming-based Hot Country Songs chart (dated Aug. 29).

The song, released on Big Loud Records, makes the first No. 1 entrance since December 2017 and only the fifth start at the summit in the history of the chart, which began as an all-encompassing genre survey in 1958.

Released as a stand-alone single Aug. 14, “Summers” drew 23.5 million U.S. streams in the week ending Aug. 20, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data, the most first-week streams ever for a Hot Country Songs chart hit by a solo male with no accompanying acts. It’s the largest opening frame overall since Dan + Shay and Justin Bieber’s “10,000 Hours” launched with 33.3 million (Oct. 19, 2019).

“Summers” also opens with 28,000 downloads sold in the week ending Aug. 20 and 607,000 airplay audience impressions in the week ending Aug. 23.

As Wallen’s debut LP If I Know Me rebounds for a second week at No. 1 on Top Country Albums (25,000 equivalent album units, up 12%), he tops that tally, Hot Country Songs, Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales.

Wallen is the first artist to dominate four country charts simultaneously since April 6, 2019, when Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy” led Hot Country Songs, Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales and This One’s for You ruled Top Country Albums. Combs and Kane Brown are the only artists that have led all five country charts simultaneously, having added Country Airplay coronations to their sweeps.

“Summers,” which Wallen wrote with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, is the first title to debut in the Hot Country Songs penthouse since Dec. 16, 2017, when Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line’s “Meant to Be” began its record 50-week reign. Wallen lands the first solo No. 1 start since Craig Wayne Boyd, as the winner of NBC’s The Voice in December 2014 sent “My Baby’s Got a Smile on Her Face” in at the summit the following month.

“This is crazy. We wrote ‘Summers’ just a few months ago, and I really didn’t know if it would even make my album, let alone do everything it’s done so far,” Wallen tells Billboard. “I can’t wait to see what else it does, and can’t wait for you to see what else we have in store for album two.”

“Summers” is Wallen’s second Hot Country Songs No. 1. “Whiskey Glasses” wrapped a 30-week ascent to the top in May 2019 and led for two weeks.

On the all-genre, multi-metric Billboard Hot 100, “Summers” roars in at No. 6. It’s only the second top 10 Hot 100 debut for a song by a solo male and no accompanying acts that has appeared on Hot Country Songs, after Garth Brooks’ alter ego Chris Gaines bowed at No. 5 with “Lost in You” in September 1999.

“Summers” opens at No. 2 on the all-genre Digital Song Sales chart and No. 5 on Streaming Songs.

On Country Streaming Songs, “Summers” marks Wallen’s first No. 1 arrival and third leader overall. On Country Digital Song Sales, he notches his first No. 1.

Meanwhile, Wallen’s “More Than My Hometown” ranks at No. 14 on Hot Country Songs and No. 25 on Country Airplay (8.1 million, up 6%). Big Loud is promoting both that track and “Summers,” which enters Country Airplay at No. 58, to radio.

‘DRINK’ UP Justin Moore nets his eighth Country Airplay No. 1, as “Why We Drink” ascends 3-1, up 11% to 32.1 million impressions.

The song follows Moore’s last leader, “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home,” in September 2019. He first topped Country Airplay with “Small Town USA” in October 2009.

NEW TOP 10s Lee Brice’s “One of Them Girls” reaches the top 10 on both Hot Country Songs (13-9) and Country Airplay (12-10; 20.8 million, up 24%). He ups his count to nine top 10s on the former chart and 11 on the latter.

Luke Combs adds his 10th Hot Country Songs top 10, as “Lovin’ on You” climbs 12-10. It rises 6-3 on Country Airplay (27.6 million, up 13%).

Plus, Kane Brown scores his fifth Top Country Albums top 10 as his EP Mixtape, Vol. 1 arrives at No. 2 with 22,000 equivalent album units. He’s led the list with both of his LPs: Kane Brown (12 weeks, beginning in 2016) and Experiment (one, 2018).
