WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after an off-duty Pawtucket Police officer shot an 18-year-old man in his car on Nooseneck Hill Road Wednesday evening, according to West Greenwich Police Chief Richard Ramsay.
Ramsay said the incident between the two men started on I-95 and ended in front of Wicked Good Pizza.
“I believe the officer saw something on I-95 that was bad and followed, but that’s under investigation,” Ramsay said, adding that the officer fired only one shot. He also said it’s believed the gun used was the officer’s service weapon.
The victim, who lives in West Greenwich, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he is in stable condition, according to Ramsay.
The officer was not injured in the incident, though Ramsay said he’s shaken up.
“It’s always traumatic when you’re involved in a shooting, so we’re worried about him,” he said.
Ramsay wouldn’t elaborate on the events leading up to the shooting at this time, but assured there’s no threat to the public.
“The community is safe, the incident is over and it’s under investigation,” he said. “Nobody is in harm’s way at this point.”
Ramsay asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the West Greenwich Police Department at (401) 397-7171 or R.I. State Police at (401) 444-1000.
