Americana Highways brings you the premiere of this title track from Edward David Anderson’s upcoming release Chasing Butterflies, due to be released October 19th on Black Dirt Records. The record features Edward David Anderson singing and playing acoustic, electric & baritone guitars as well as banjo. The rhythm section is Jimmy Nutt on bass and percussion with Jon Davis on drums and percussion. Brad Kuhn plays assorted keys, while Todd Beene (Lucero) plays pedal steel. (Kimi Samson will be playing violin on the album, although not on this track.)
The project was recorded at the Nutt House Recording Studio in the alluring hollow of Muscle Shoals Alabama with Jimmy Nutt producing (SteelDrivers). Anderson opens the story with “everything I do, and everything I done, goes back to what my daddy did.” With the clear vocals highlighted front and center on this song, and the music sustaining the suspense, we’re carried along in the tale of “chasing butterflies in the wind,” a story on the run, in and out of relationships, in and out of prison, and in and out of sobriety, following life’s veering, restless paths just as butterflies do.
This song is based on the life of an older friend of mine that I played music with off and on for a couple years. He’s quite a character and a hell of a storyteller. Damn good singer too. I guess the tales he told stuck with me and a couple years later this song sorta dropped out of the sky. While the verses and feel are most definitely based on his story, I can personally identify with the sentiment of the chorus and think others will as well. And the haunting pedal steel playing of Todd Beene (Lucero) elevates this tune to another level! — Edward David Anderson
