The Brighton football team kept the ball on the ground in its Division 4 North final against Mystic Valley on Friday night and it paid off big-time.

Brighton got four touchdown rushes of 30 yards or longer and ran away from Mystic Valley, 52-28.

“We knew they would bite on the misdirection and we figured if we could get them to move off their spot on defense, then we would be able to move the ball,” Brighton coach Randolph Abraham said. “Kevin [Brown] had a great game. He ran with power, great vision, and, you know, he didn’t let us down.”

Brighton’s Erick Brown took the handoff on the Bengals’ second play on offense and rushed for a 36-yard score to put Brighton ahead early.

Kevin Brown then took over in the Brighton backfield and proceeded to rush for touchdowns of 64 and 30 yards. The Brighton offense finished with 446 yards rushing, with Kevin Brown leading the way with 266 yards and four touchdowns.

“It’s all the offensive line. They make the blocks and I just feed off what they give me,” Kevin Brown said. “Coach tells us to keep two hands on the ball and just burst. It doesn’t stop once you get through the line. He always says to finish your runs and that’s what I did today.”

The Brighton offense wasn’t the only unit clicking as the Bengals also scored on special teams. Jerrod Clark blocked a Mystic Valley punt and was able to scoop the ball and return it 34 yards for a touchdown. That score gave Brighton a 20-14 halftime lead.

“I feel like Jerrod had a great game,” Abraham said. “He was in the backfield several times. He did a good job on that block and it turned into a touchdown, which was impressive and it kind of shifted the momentum.”

In the second half it was more of the same from the Brighton offense, with a few key passes mixed in. Brighton’s second pass attempt of the game resulted in the Bengals’ second score of the third quarter. Quarterback Nate Hall found Clark on an 11-yard score to extend the lead to 36-14.

Mystic Valley responded with two scores to get the Eagles with striking distance but two more rushing scores by Kevin Brown put the game out of reach. Brown’s 3-yard TD with a minute left extended the lead to 52-28.
