School football roundup: Latin Academy tops O’Bryant in Division 4A North

The Latin Academy football team rode a balanced offensive attack past O’Bryant in the Division 4A North sectional final at White Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Dragons rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown and earned 132 yards and three more scores through the air to secure a 30-12 victory.

Latin Academy will play Millis in the Division 4A state semifinals Friday in Brockton.

Latin Academy quarterback John Teehan completed his first seven passes and finished 11 for 15 for 132 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers.

“I think [Teehan] showed tremendous poise both running and passing the ball,” Latin Academy coach Rocco Zizza said. “The big thing today was ball security. They had two big turnovers today and we didn’t. We have a solid team. Not too many players that are different than others ability-wise, so it makes since to spread the ball out.”

O’Bryant struck first when quarterback Kobe Smith connected with Emmanuel Exilhomme for a 63-yard touchdown on the team’s first drive. Latin Academy responded with a 15-play drive that was capped with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Teehan to Devon Harris-James. They hooked up for another touchdown on the next drive to give Latin Academy a 14-6 lead.

“We figured that they’d focus on Patrick Fitzgerald, he’s been our main receiver this year,” Zizza said. “We knew that they’d be covering him and that would leave other people open. We figured that’d work out for us and it did.”

Latin Academy added to its lead in the second half when Teehan found Fitzgerald, a junior tight end, on a fade for a 29-yard score.

Teehan had the only rushing touchdown of the game. Junior running back Joshua Lewis led the way on the ground with 107 yards, and he set up the Dragons at the 2-yard line before Teehan took over to punch it in. The score gave Latin Academy a 30-6 lead in the fourth quarter.
