SB 789, Passed by Michigan Legislature, Would Weaken Protections for Domestic Violence Victims, Allow Some Stalkers and Domestic Abusers to Carry Concealed, Loaded Weapons
In response to the Michigan legislature’s passage of S.B. 789 –legislation that would allow some people subject to stalking and domestic violence restraining orders to obtain permits to carry concealed handguns – the Michigan Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America released the following statement:
“This dangerous legislation would put Michigan women and communities at risk,” said Kristen Moore, a volunteer with the Michigan Chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “The presence of a firearm in a domestic violence situation makes it five times more likely that the woman will be killed. I urge Governor Snyder to veto S.B. 789 because keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers is basic common sense and is proven to save lives. Our governor should be working to protect victims of stalking and domestic violence, not to arm abusers under restraining orders.”
