Coping During the Pandemic: Justin Carter

Justin Carter (Office of the Dean of Students) hosting the virtual Evening of the Stars in May 2020.

During this global pandemic, resilience can take a village and a toolbox of self-care skills. Justin Carter encourages students, friends and colleagues to build community and lean on that “tribe” to avoid feeling isolated. It’s why the Office of the Dean of Students team member launched a new virtual workshop series – the Resiliency Project – to get Longhorns together for honest conversations. Students learn from their peers and staff how to overcome adversity.

“We’re teaching students tools so if they get knocked down, they know how to get back up. Community is a big piece of this. Students say they appreciate how the conversations are genuine and vulnerable; knowing that other students have gone through similar experiences is reassuring,” said Carter.

As Student Emergency Services outreach and prevention coordinator, Carter understands students are facing a unique set of challenges. Many may not have a solid support network – the resilience workshops can provide a safe space for them. He also recommends rounding friends up for a meet-up on Zoom, FaceTime, or the House Party app, or getting everyone connected on a GroupMe text chat. It can sometimes feel like a lot of effort to schedule it, but the personal connections are worth it.

The next Resiliency 101 workshop will be specifically for graduate students. Bookmark our Division Events Calendar and be on the lookout for more details.
