Do I have to choose between hosting and visiting? What if I want to do both?
Yes, this time we are asking you to choose. We might not always have to but the real benefit of participation is getting to talk with your colleagues about a class on campus - so we want as many different people as possible have that chance.
I’m being observed for review purposes this year. Can I use that for this program?
No, we want these to be low stakes experiences for everyone. But if you wanted to brainstorm with a Hubster about what the observation experience might be like, you can always come talk to us!
Will someone from the Hub also observe my class?
Not for in person classes. Hosts will have the chance to ask for someone from the Hub to attend the debrief discussion, if they so choose. We get to talk to your colleagues about teaching all the time - we know how thoughtful you and your colleagues are, and can’t wait for you to find out, too!
Do I have to go to a class in my college (or discipline, or department, or…)?
Nope! Sign up to visit a class that fits in your schedule. Our students take classes in more than one college, at least some of the time. It might be really exciting to get the chance to be in a very different classroom!
I “only” lecture. Is that still worth visiting? Or... In my class, it’s mostly students working with each other. Is that worth visiting? Or…
YES. Yes! This is a chance to give your colleagues a peek into your class and see what it’s like. Maybe you’re teaching in a way that’s very similar to your visitors, maybe not! Either way, you’ll get to have a friendly conversation about how and why you teach the way you do, and what’s working for your students.
How the heck are we going to observe an asynchronous online class?!
The Hub will give hosts and visitors a structure that makes sense for the class. We will help visitors have limited access to parts of the class so that they can see a "chunk" from beginning to end, even if it doesn’t quite look the same as sitting in a classroom during one class session.
What if I just want to organize a visit on my own?
Be our guest! If you want to have a brainstorming session with someone in the Hub about who to ask and how to arrange it, we’re happy to be a sounding board.
What do I get for participating?
Hosts get to think about what parts of their class will be valuable for someone else to see, get to hear from visitors about what it’s like to be in their class, and get to know more instructors on campus and maybe someone from the Hub. Visitors get to see another class on campus, have a conversation with an instructor about what it’s like to teach their class, and maybe talk with someone from the Hub. Everyone gets to enjoy a sense of pride* in supporting teaching and collegiality on campus.
