Named one of MovieMaker Magazine’s “25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World,” and one of the “50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee,” HIFF showcases films from over 45 countries each year, and offers an intimate and inviting space for filmmakers, industry members, and audience from all over the world to come together.

With multiple Academy Award & BAFTA®-qualifying competitive and non-competitive categories, HIFF seeks diverse films made by filmmakers who traverse the globe in order to tell their stories through different cultural styles and experiences. With prizes of cash and in-kind goods and services valued at more than $165,000, the Festival continues to honor and support emerging filmmakers who represent cinema’s next generation of innovative film artists. Over the past 27 editions, HIFF has awarded filmmakers with over a million dollars in prizes.
Festival selections also continue to play an important role during awards season, with a significant number of titles highlighted every year at the Academy Awards. Films in the 2019 festival received 40 Academy Award nominations, including 5 of the Best Picture nominations (PARASITE, MARRIAGE STORY, FORD V FERRARI, THE IRISHMAN, and JOJO RABBIT).
The Festival has screened the eventual Academy Award Best Picture winner 10 years in a row, the only festival in the world with such a distinction. Overall, films in the last 13 editions have received a total of 421 Oscar nominations.
