The George Washington University Bicentennial Signature event at the School of Business will feature a panel discussion on a responsible development and use of AI technologies and focus on the issues of ethics, policy, and regulation of AI in the financial services and healthcare sectors. Panelists will address some of the most critical concerns surrounding AI, including data privacy and digital equality, and ensuring that new AI design and applications are built around the principles of greater inclusiveness and increased fairness. Panel discussion will be followed by a live Q&A session with GW students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Welcome remarks will be given by Dr. Anuj Mehrotra, Dean of the George Washington School of Business.

Panelists:

Ashley Casovan Headshot Ashley Casovan, Executive Director, AI Global

Ashley is an engaged and innovative leader who has always had a deep interest in advancing the public good. Recently leaving her long-standing career in the public service where she was last Director of Data and Digital for the Government of Canada, she has now taken on the role of Executive Director of AI Global, a non-profit dedicated to creating practical tools to ensure the responsible use of AI. Throughout her career she has worked at the intersection of innovative technology and data, and its impact on providing better information and services.

With a proven ability to build and manage creative, highly energized, focused teams, Gavin brings exceptional insight regarding how to initiate and enforce strict budget controls addressing company needs and promotion of growth.

Alka A. Patel, Head of AI Ethics Policy, Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC)

Alka Patel serves as the Chief of Responsible AI for the Department of Defense (DoD) Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) where she focuses on the Department’s responsible development, use and adoption of innovative technologies.  She is at the forefront of governance and policy, workforce education, acquisition, and international dialogues to support and advance Responsible AI. Alka brings over 20+ years of experience working at the intersection of technology, business, and law. Most recently, Alka was the inaugural Executive Director of the Digital Transformation and Innovation Center sponsored by PwC (an industry/academic partnership) at Carnegie Mellon University.  In addition to leading the start-up of the Center she managed a number of research projects (from project scoping through delivery) with interdisciplinary faculty teams in the area of artificial intelligence, data analytics, and cybersecurity/privacy.

Rajeev Ronanki serves as Senior Vice President, Chief Digital Officer at Anthem. He is leading the transformation of Anthem to become a digital/AI-first enterprise through driving the vision, strategy, and execution of Anthem’s Digital, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Exponential Technology, and Innovation Portfolios. Through these efforts, Ronanki is enabling Anthem to harness the power of AI and data to better understand healthcare consumers and provide tailored, personalized care. His experience spans over 20 years of innovation-driven industry and social change across healthcare and technology.

Steve Lohr has covered technology, business and economics for the New York Times for more than twenty years. In 2013, he was part of the team awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting. He was a foreign correspondent for a decade and served as an editor, and has written for magazines including the New York Times Magazine, the Atlantic, and the Washington Monthly. He is the author of Data-ism, which examines the field of data science and decision-making (Harper Business, 2015). He is also the author of a history of software and computer programming, Go To (Basic Books, 2001).
