HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Police are investigating an apparent murder-suicide at a Waikiki assisted living facility on Tuesday morning.

Lt. Deena Thoemmes, of HPD’s CID Homicide Division, said the shooting happened about 11 a.m. when an 86-year-old woman and 92-year-old man were found dead at the facility with gunshot wounds.

The incident happened in the Plaza at Waikiki parking garage.

Thoemmes said the two were married, but only the woman lived at the facility. The case has been classified as two unattended deaths as police continue to investigate.

“It appears that they’re both a couple, a married couple. A note was left at the scene, and the note appears that they have taken their lives. Whether, like I said, it’s two suicides, two unattended deaths or a murder-suicide, that’s still under investigation,” Lt. Thoemmes said.

The shooting happened at a sitting area in the parking garage.

Several people nearby heard the gunshots and called 911. A weapon was recovered, Thoemmes said.

In a statement, the Plaza at Waikiki said it was working closely with police and is offering counseling to residents and employees.
